Town Of Windsor Community Service Officer in Windsor, Colorado

Description Hiring Range: $26.97 $29.67 hourly

Work Schedule: Generally, 40 hours per week various shifts, days, evenings, weekends, and holidays.

NATURE OF WORK The Community Service Officer position is a limited commission, civilian position primarily designed to respond to service-oriented, rather than enforcement-related police calls requiring Peace Officer status. Investigates traffic accidents and cold crimes with no suspects, assists with crime scene investigation and preservation, assists with traffic direction, completes vin inspections, provides citizen fingerprinting services, and regulates traffic, parking, animal control responsibilities and other municipal ordinance compliance.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED The Community Service Officer works under the direct supervision of the Neighborhood Services Supervisor.

Essential Job Functions ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Perform a variety of specialized and technical non-sworn law enforcement duties in support of the Police Division including in the areas of patrol, property and evidence, training, juvenile diversion, and other areas as assigned. Respond to non-hazardous, non-emergency, and/or cold calls for service in-lieu of a Police Officer; respond to emergency calls including traffic collisions; respond to hazard calls including spills and items in roadway; interview complainants; prepare necessary criminal and non-criminal police reports including traffic, theft, ID theft, stolen/recovered vehicles, fraud, lost/stolen property, found property, vandalism/graffiti, and burglary reports; assist other agencies as required. Identify, document, preserve, and collect evidence at crime scenes including from general crimes investigated within the scope of own investigation as well as at major crime scenes in support of other personnel; perform photography duties as requested. Dictate and/or write reports in reference to investigations; complete evidence vouchers for evidence or property collected; book evidence or property into evidence. Safely catches, contains/quarantines and impounds animal-at-large using specialized equipment such as catch poles, leashes, cages and traps. Picks up/disposes of dead animals. Safeguards self and public from aggressive/dangerous animals. Enforce town animal control and licensing laws; aids with animals in distressed or freeing trapped animals. Remove animals from inhumane conditions as necessary. Perform a variety of duties to enforce specific sections of the Colorado Vehicle Codes and Town of Windsor municipal ordinances; proactively patrol town to enforce parking codes and regulations by issuing warnings or citations as applicable; have vehicles towed as required; advise the general public on laws and regulations affecting parking. Provide traffic control including at potentially hazardous situations, traffic accidents, crime scenes, fires, funerals, special events, and during power outages and weather-related incidents. Provide information and assistance to the general public; answer citizen inquiries and respond to complaints and requests for services from other department staff, the general public, other law enforcement agencies, and other agencies; provide information to violators, the general public, businesses, school communities, and other government agencies regarding codes, laws, and ordinances as well as department services, programs, and practices; give department tours. Perform a variety of clerical and administrative functions in support of administration and patrol division activities; provide training to new personnel related to area of assignment; attend committee meetings; assist with special projects as assigned. Fingerprint citizens for employmen and licensing. Maintain various logs and records; gather information and prepare routine reports as assigned; enter, input, and retrieve a variety of information using a computer terminal. OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES The Community Service Officer position participates in the Shared Fleet Vehicle Program, which requires an annual motor vehicle record check. Performs other work as assigned. May be required to work overtime. May participate in town employee committees, projects or assignments as required. Performs work safely; reports safety concerns to management; supports safe work practices.
