We are currently seeking a scientist/microbiologist to strengthen our Animal Nutrition and Health research program, based in Wilmington, DE. The candidate will be working with a group of scientists with expertise in Microbiology, Molecular biology, Animal Science and Biochemistry; in addition to interacting with technical supports and customers from different animal farms. For this role, the candidate must have proven experience and a strong foundation in animal science, experienced in microbiology and molecular biology, and has good knowledge of genomics approaches. This will be a predominantly lab-based role with a focus on processing animal-based samples based on microbiological, genomic and biochemical laboratory procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Actively interact with IFF Animal Nutrition & Health service laboratories, design and execute experiments to explore the impact of enzymes and microbes on animal nutrition and health.

  • Lead the timely execution of Ruminant-related research projects, the routine operation and maintenance of the Ruminant service laboratory. Assist the operation of laboratories serving other animals.

  • Interact with animal farms and IFF field support technical managers to provide suggestions and feedbacks for animal trial-related research activities.

  • Plan and execute in-vitro rumen simulation studies with Ankom system in alignment with the Innovation team and Technical sales team.

  • Coordinate the lab schedule and trial prioritization in alignment with Global Application Manager.

  • Analyze data and prepare reports to share results with the Technical sales team an Innovation team.

  • Manage the ruminant application lab (consumables, safety etc).

  • Ensure proper planning and timely execution of the trials.

  • Actively participate in technical advancement and protocol optimization within the animal service laboratories. Explore and implement new methods and technologies when needed.

  • Contribute to R&D research projects related to animal models, especially ruminant, by processing animal samples, executing biochemical and physiological assays, and carrying out molecular biological studies.

  • Generate and effectively communicate data, ideas, hypothesis etc. Prepare technical reports, data summaries, presentations, protocols, and other technical and regulatory documents.

  • Provide technical guidance and training to junior researchers.

Job Requirements

  • Ph.D. degree in Animal Science – preferably Ruminant studies.

  • 1-3 years of research experience in animal sample collection and processing, including but not limited to feed, rumen fluid, blood, milk and/or feces.

  • Some experience with animal husbandry is very helpful.

  • 1-3 years of experience with general molecular biology operations including DNA isolation and quantification, next-generation sequencing.

  • General understanding of microbiological techniques such as aseptic technique, media preparation, serial dilutions, and microbe culturing.

  • Experienced with basic biochemical techniques including enzyme activity assays and ELISA assays.

  • Demonstrated ability to use existing software for sequencing data analysis, such as QIIME2, RStudio, JMP, etc.

  • Experienced in manuscript writing and publishing.

  • Ability to manage an animal science focused laboratory with hands-on-mentality and a strong affinity for lab work.

  • Demonstrated ability to work as part of a multi-functional team to deliver on specific project goals. Proven ability to work and collaborate with others. Demonstrated team player and strong interpersonal skills.

  • Goal oriented and capable of task-oriented delivery. Willing to learn new skills and techniques. Able to adapt to changes, drive multiple workstreams in parallel, and thrive in a fast-paced R&D environment and changing business environment.

  • Demonstrated organizational skills and excellent attention to detail. Able to deliver consistent high-quality experimental data from Animal Science, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, and Physiology experiments.
