The Lab Support Specialist is a dynamic role that combines responsibility for executing pharmaceutical lab projects at IFF’s Wilmington site with a significant emphasis in technical report writing. This position allows for remote work (e.g. 1-2 days/week of technical writing), but also requires on-site support (e.g. 3-4 days/week of lab work).

Key Responsibilities:

Application technologist responsibilities

  • Contribute to/lead application projects utilizing IFF’s excipients by generating ideas and concepts to meet current and anticipated customer needs and offer strong alternatives to competitive products.

  • Preparing formulation samples with minimum supervision using standard pharmaceutical processing equipment such as mixers, blenders, granulators, tableting machines, etc.

  • Develop expertise and provide technical solutions for pharmaceutical lab projects in support of critical customers, applications and/or new product development projects.

Technical report writing responsibilities

  • Collaborate with team members, senior scientists and researchers to write technical reports based on laboratory studies conducted by the team.

  • Contribute to the design of new experiments and effectively driving projects through the lab project management process.

  • Communicate results effectively, including data analysis, conclusions and recommendations.

Job Requirements

  • Highly collaborative and an effective communicator with strong problem solving and time management skills

  • Requires proficiency with standard workstation software, including Word, Excel, and any specialized computer-based systems (as appropriate)

  • Strong technical and interpersonal skills to work effectively in a team environment.

  • Good lab housekeeping practices, proper waste disposal, maintaining lab supplies and storage of test substances.

  • Maintaining an electronic laboratory notebook and accurately documenting all experiments and results in a timely manner. Organizing data tables and charts to present data. Preparing summaries of work and results to be included in reports.

  • Understanding and strong commitment to safety for themselves and their co-workers.

  • Demonstrated ability to handle multiple assignments independently with broad guidance from leadership.

  • Good communication skills sufficient to communicate technical work, results, and observations effectively with others across functions and to multiple levels of the organization.

  • Demonstrated ability to learn new technologies with an understanding of basic chemistry and biology principles and apply understanding to make suggestions for improvements.

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry, Biology, Biochemistry, Chemical Engineering, Bioengineering, Biomedical Engineering, Materials Science, Laboratory Medicine, or closely related field with 3-5 years’ experience OR Associate’s Degree and a minimum of 7 years’ experience. Exceptional recent bachelor’s degree graduates with relevant undergraduate research experience will be considered.

Preferred Experience:

  • Awareness of safety aspects related to working with hazardous chemicals and hazardous operations

Preferred Education:

  • 2+ years or more of related experience in industrial and/or pharmaceutical product preparation/characterization, analysis, polymer characterization, and polymer chemistry

The Pharma Solutions business will be taking on its next chapter of growth as a trusted partner for the

pharmaceutical industry with the announcement to sell Pharma Solutions to Roquette. This move will position Pharma Solutions to expand its industry leadership through continued investment in innovation to meet the evolving needs of pharmaceutical manufacturers and developers worldwide.

The sale is presently expected to close in the first half of 2025, pending regulatory approvals and other closing conditions. The Pharma Solutions business unit will remain a part of IFF until close and, at such time, it will transition to Roquette.
