Distinguishing Features of Work

This is supervisory work that involves dispatching and monitoring buses and drivers. This position is responsible for scheduling details needed to provide efficient bus service for citizens in the area served. Supervision includes all of the activities of bus drivers in operating situations and investigation of customer complaints about drivers and bus operations. Work is directed and reviewed by a supervisor.

The day and hours for this position: Monday - Saturday 4:30 AM - 1:00 AM\ Bargaining Unit: Employees Council

Examples of Work Performed
  • Monitor bus operator performance to ensure compliance with Wichita Transit operating procedures and policies.
  • Observes street operations to monitor operator driving habits, safety procedures and overall operations
  • Observe and reports issues with the bus stop locations or safety
  • Maintains contact with operating personnel regarding operating problems
  • Investigates accidents
  • Trains drivers
  • Initiate required discipline through Superintendent
  • Creates and maintains electronic andmanuel records
  • Assists with scheduling, run cutting and training.
  • Completion of work assignments requires operation of a vehicle.

Requirements of Work
  • Considerable knowledge of the geography of the city and names and locations of streets
  • Thorough knowledge of the labor agreement as it affects operations
  • Ability to maintain acceptable attendance and punctuality
  • Ability to effectively plan, organize, and direct the work of others
  • Ability to follow complex oral or written instructions
  • Ability to represent the company effectively to union employees
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment in emergencies
  • Ability to use a computer to access, interpret and record information

  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with associates, representatives of other organizations, and the public
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing, including by two-way radio
  • Ability to acquire and maintain a valid Kansas Class B Commercial Driver\'s License (CDL) with passenger and air brake endorsements
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality as it relates to matters including but not limited to FMLA, discipline, and other personnel matters.
  • An employee shall not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of other individuals in the workplace.
Required Experience and Training
  • At least one year of work experience with a transit system is required, plus completion of training in Emergency Procedures, Defensive Driving and Customer Relations.

  • Must have a valid Class B Commercial Driver License (CDL) at time of hire.

  • A minimum of one year supervisory or leadership experience is preferred.

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need of a sponsorship.

Offers of employment are contingent upon passing a pre-employment physical, which includes drug screening, and upon satisfactory evaluation of the results of a criminal record check.

Starting pay for current City employees will be determined by City of Wichita policy or applicable bargaining unit agreement.
