The Tooling Engineer position will be in the Plant 3 – Whitehall Casting Operation. The Tooling Engineer will partner with Product Engineering and manufacturing to standardize the design of replacement tooling, develop tooling inspection criteria, and manage tooling inventory to maintain the required tooling inventory levels needed to support production. Tooling Engineer will monitor the quality yield of the tooling and develop activities to drive continuous improvement activities to drive to a zero-defect yield. This position will also establish and maintain external & internal customer associate documents; prepare part specific work instructions; maintain knowledge of job cost; and develop/implement appropriate plans to improve profitability. Launch new products (Tooling) when required, which consists of qualifying tooling, manage customer requirements and approvals, develop instructions, design/test/qualify/inspection criteria tooling, etc.
Roles & Responsibilities:
Tooling Design & Development – Work with Product Engineer and tooling design engineers to manufacture wax dies, core dies, and associated fixtures using CAD software.
Process Optimization – Work closely with product engineering and manufacturing teams to improve tooling efficiency and reduce defects in cast components.
Quality Control & Testing – Conduct inspections and tests to ensure tooling meets Howmet standards and internal specifications. Submit relevant qualification data to OEMs to qualify tooling.
Collaboration – Coordinate with design engineers, production teams, and suppliers to ensure seamless integration of tooling into the casting process.
Documentation & Compliance – Maintain detailed records of tooling designs, modifications, and performance while ensuring compliance with industry regulations.
Continuous Improvement – Suggest enhancements and innovations to optimize tooling performance and lifecycle.
Technical Problem-Solving – Diagnose and resolve tooling-related technical issues, enhancing functionality and efficiency.
Project Management – Lead tooling build and qualification projects from initiation of tool quotation, through funding/build, and on to the customer qualification package approval needed for production release.
Participate in the six-sigma program and document any cost saving projects.
Establish and maintain external & internal customer associate documents; prepare part specific work instructions; maintain knowledge of job cost; and develop/implement appropriate plans to improve profitability.
Develop new tooling (NPI) when required, which consists of developing, Customer requirements and approvals, W.I., Tooling inspection, A.I. updates, etc.
Manage a tooling inventory and develop tooling inspection criteria, develop work instructions, reviews and updates tooling design as needed.
Basic Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or similar, from an accredited institution.
Employees must be legally authorized to work in the United States. Verification of employment eligibility will be required at the time of hire. Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
Preferred Qualifications
3 years of Casting, Aerospace Industry, or tooling experience
Proficiency Minitab, SAS, JMP software package
Strong analytical abilities
Six Sigma Green Belt
Excellent verbal and written skills
Proficient with various CAD software
Must be a self-starter, manage time effectively and meet deliverable deadlines
Must be willing to be a leader that positively represents Howmet Aerospace and influences internal personnel to represent our company in a professional and business-like manner
Must have demonstrated ability to create trustworthy relationships and energize teams
