Position Details:

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES

 

Conducting research; obtaining grants; develop and maintain an extramurally funded research program. Conduct research on the X-disease system, including entomological research on X-disease vectors, and pathogen-plant-insect interactions. In addition, the Research Associate will obtain research grants and develop and maintain an extramurally funded research program. In addition, the Research Associate will summarize and write up results in the form of scientific publications and share findings through scientific and Extension presentations. The research will include coordinating efforts among researchers and tree fruit industry members (growers and crop consultants) to accomplish project goals.

 

75% Research and Informal instruction

 

Conduct field trials by transferring cherry plants into orchard settings for experiments.

 

Set up netting experiments to exclude insect vectors of X-disease and test their efficacy.

 

Conduct experiments on the factors driving the abundance of X-disease vectors in commercial stone fruit orchards in Washington.

 

Plan and conduct experiments on X-disease vectors, and related research directed toward ultimate publication.

 

Conduct experiments evaluating the ability of X-disease vectors to transmit X-disease phytoplasma between plants.

 

Analyze data resulting from field and laboratory experiments.

 

10% Writing

 

Prepare articles for publication describing the results of field and laboratory experiments.

 

5% Supervising

 

Supervise undergraduate research assistants in conducting research projects and academic development.

 

5% Service

 

Participate in college and university committees; evaluate research proposals and grants

 

5% other duties as assigned

 

Miscellaneous duties as assigned.

 

Required Qualifications:

 

• A Ph.D. degree or an equivalent qualification appropriate for the discipline of study.

 

• 2 years of post-PhD experience working on vectors of temperate tree fruit pathogens.

 

• Demonstrated experience publishing research findings as a first author.

 

• Demonstrated effective interpersonal, written and oral communication skills;

 

• Demonstrated ability to interact with large groups and individuals at all work levels;

 

• Demonstrated sensitivity to and desire to promote diversity;

 

• Demonstrated proficiency in the use of computers and software applications;

 

• Must have, or be able to obtain by time of hire, a valid driver's license and meet requirements in accordance with https://policies.wsu.edu/prf/index/manuals/safety-policies-procedures-manual/sppm-7-10/#four_3 and departmental driving standards.
