We are seeking a motivated Senior Control Systems Engineer to join our Core Energy Storage Team. You will apply your skills to advance our in-house energy storage platforms, enabling Generac to deliver better energy solutions to our customers.

The Sr. Control Systems Engineer is a hands-on position responsible for delivering rigorously-developed and tested control system solutions for energy storage applications. Solutions typically incorporate signal processing, filtering and estimation algorithms, modulators, phase-locked loops, predictive control algorithms, etc. The successful candidate will take ownership of developing high-quality control system solutions and contribute across residential and commercial/industrial end-markets.

The position can be based in the Waukesha, WI Generac headquarters or in our Boston-area technical center located north of Boston.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • With mentorship from principal and staff engineers; contribute to developing a robust and reusable control system algorithm library/platform for Core energy storage solutions

  • Design and implement digital controls for energy storage technology stacks; including inverters, dc/dc converters, battery management systems, and electrical machines

  • Work closely with power electronics, battery, and firmware engineers to translate product requirements and broader direction into detailed plans for control system development

  • Demonstrate ownership of your project workflow management through design, validation, field, & production release phases of control system development

  • Rigorously develop detailed physical system models and control system models; share and disseminate validated models with the technical user community

  • Contribute to control system platform roadmaps & innovation projects; work with engineering teams to assess needs & ideas, add capabilities, and adapt platforms for new applications

  • Develop test solutions for controls validation; develop and specify test fixtures; and contribute to continuous improvement of automated test systems

  • Provide support for released control systems; drive root cause and develop solutions to discovered field issues within the issue tracking system

Minimal Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering or similar Engineering discipline

  • 5 years of Power Electronics, Controls Systems or similar related experience

Preferred Qualifications and Skills:

  • Rigorous educational training in control system theory and/or digital signal processing; Master’s degree or advanced degree preferred

  • Hands-on working propensity & solid lab skills; not satisfied until it works in the lab & field

  • Proficiency developing embedded C code in DSP’s; good coding skills

  • Proficiency in system simulation environments (PLECS, Matlab/Simulink, PSIM, etc)

  • Demonstrated understanding of application physics and first principles; familiarity with power electronics or power systems is a plus

  • Ability to perform upfront trade-off analysis; identify issues; and drive technical decisions

  • Ability to develop Python scripts for analysis and data processing

  • Ability to identify key technical issues and communicate them clearly and appropriately

  • Familiarity with analog and digital circuitry; the ability to model and account for circuitry in control system design

  • Familiarity with fieldbus networking protocols (e.g., including CAN, Modbus, etc)

  • Familiarity with version/release management tools (e.g., Git), and issue tracking tools such as Jira

Physical demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear; and use hands to manipulate objects or controls. The employee is regularly required to stand and walk. On occasion the incumbent may be required to stoop, bend or reach above the shoulders. The employee must occasionally lift up to 25 pounds. Specific conditions of this job are typical of frequent and continuous computer-based work requiring periods of sitting, close vision and ability to adjust focus. Occasional travel.
