Cornell Cooperative Extension Parenting and Life Skills Educator - Watertown, NY in Watertown, New York

This position will serve as the Parenting and Life Skills Educator for Cornell Cooperative Extension Association of Jefferson County. This position will implement programming from a menu of existing parenting and life skills education curricula to meet the needs of families referred from the Department of Social Services, other community agencies and self-referrals. This position will be responsible for the delivery of established parenting and life skills programming and activities, both on-site and off-site in accordance with the Parenting Program Area’s Plan of Work to include, but not limited to: one-on-one teaching, home visitation, demonstrations, newsletters, and group workshops. Programming topics may include, but are not limited to: discipline, stress reduction, communication, parenting styles, child development, home sanitation, budgeting, breastfeeding, basic nutrition, family safety and goal setting. This position will also be responsible for community-based parenting and life skills classes in a group class environment. Twenty percent (20%) of the position will support the New York State Department of Health CARE project with individual home visits and parenting classes. CCE’s parenting education model is strengths based and works on the belief that the well-being of families is grounded in informed parenting. Parents create the environment of family life and provide children with their first and most influential model for healthy and responsible behavior. Research indicates the strong influence adults have on their family’s lifestyle, health and fitness and overall well-being. This affects all aspects of a child’s life, including how well they do in school. Parents are their children’s first and most important teachers. Research-based, evidence-based and best practices curricula will be utilized to deliver programming.

POSITION DETAILS:

This position is a part-time non-exempt position, 20 hours per week. The hourly rate for this position is $20.00. This position, based on eligibility, offers a comprehensive benefit package, to include: health and dental insurance, NYS retirement, vacation, sick and personal leave.

POSITION INFORMATION:

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent education (Associate’s Degree and 2 years of transferrable program/functional experience).

  • Experience relevant to the role of the position.

  • Home visiting experience.

  • Background in parenting education, trauma-informed practices, and familiarity with Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACES).

  • Valid NYS Driver’s License and the ability to meet travel requirements associated with this position.

  • Ability to work flexible hours which may include evenings and/or weekends, as appropriate.

    Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of subject matter appropriate to area of programming.

  • Breastfeeding/Lactation education training (IBCLC, CLC or commensurate hands-on experience).

  • Financial literacy training/background.

  • Demonstrated ability to plan, teach and evaluate informal educational programs through a variety of delivery methods to reach individuals and groups.

  • Demonstrated ability to function as a team member working with volunteers and staff.

  • Demonstrated ability to organize reference materials for programming purposes.

  • Demonstrated ability to relate to diverse audiences.

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively through oral, written and visual means.

  • Demonstrated ability to utilize computer technologies for educational and communication purposes.

  • Demonstrated ability in using research-based, evidence-based and/or best practices curricula.

Program Responsibilities:

Program Delivery - 70%

  • Utilize approved program resources and materials in program work.

  • Implement Parenting programming, to include, but not limited to: Home Visiting, Magic Years, Middle Years, Tween and Teen Years, Parenting After Separation and Divorce, Discipline is not a Dirty Word, Life Skills, Financial Literacy, etc. utilizing a variety of delivery methods to include, but not limited to one-on-one visits, group classes, and workshops.

  • Implement educational programing and program activities in support of other programming efforts as identified/needed to support the established plan of work.

  • Work to foster acceptance of the program, methods and policies while addressing community and individual needs and considering diverse audiences.

  • Serve as subject matter resource in discipline and provide standard responses.

  • Under the direction and oversight of the 4-H/Parenting Program Manager, apply established subject matter knowledge to create lesson plans as identified to deliver educational programs. Delivery methods include, but are not limited to: one-on-one teaching, home visitation, health fairs, newsletters, and group workshops.

  • Provide educational programs via mass media.

  • Implement programming to include, but not limited to: breastfeeding, budgeting, home sanitation, and parenting skills.

  • Serve as a team member and cooperate with the entire Association and Parenting Program staff to achieve Association program delivery goals.

Evaluation - 10%

  • Implement program evaluation as designed.

  • Interact with program participants to obtain evaluation data, to include: evaluating effectiveness of all programs.

  • Assist 4-H/Parenting Program Manager in the process of analyzing program data, and based on that analysis, assist in making recommendations for improvements in program offerings.

  • Communicate evaluation findings to constituents as appropriate.

Administrative Responsibilities:

Direction - 5%

  • Assist in the planning and promotion of major public events and programs including, but not limited to assisting with mass media efforts related to upcoming events and programs.

Management - 5%

  • Assist in identifying and recommending program needs (i.e. program supplies and materials) to the Youth and Family Development Issue Leader.

  • Assist the CARE Program Manager in identifying and recommending approaches to meet the parenting program objectives in the grant.

  • Give guidance to volunteers and staff, including those performing similar work, as appropriate.

Coordination/Operation - 5%

  • Coordinate, compile and organize existing program resources and program materials.

  • Compile, tally and format evaluation data from program participants based on existing framework.

  • Provide input to 4-H/Parenting Program Manager for program budget preparation and submit program expense reports.

  • Assist in utilizing effective marketing strategies in the promotion of programming efforts to include, but not limited to: print media, news media, social media, and multi-media efforts.

  • Organize and coordinate activities related to parenting programming.

  • Coordinate community outreach events directly supporting parent education.

  • Collaborate with Jefferson County Department of Social Services on deliverables and outcomes needed to meet contract needs.

  • Work collaboratively with the CARE Program Manager and CARE Wellness Educator to meet the parenting objectives in the grant application.

  • Effectively maintain professional relationships with other agencies, organizations and businesses that promote effective communication and facilitate continued programming efforts.

  • This position may require the transport of program participants and/or program materials and resources in performing position responsibilities.

Professional Improvement and Other Duties as Assigned - 5%

  • In cooperation with Supervisor, Deputy Executive Director and/or Executive Director, jointly develop and pursue a professional development plan as a means to increase competencies relative to position accountabilities and to address changes in programming and association priorities.

  • Collaborate in activities that are in general support of Cornell Cooperative Extension including but not limited to, general marketing of Extension programs and other duties as assigned.
