Description of Work

This position will be assigned to the Equipment Depot, Equipment Shop. The primary purpose will involve the performance of Journey level duties in the preventive maintenance, inspections, repair, and rebuilding of gasoline, diesel, electric and hybrid powered, light to heavy equipment found within the DOT fleet. This includes but is not limited to; engines (gasoline and diesel), electrical systems, power trains, wheels, tires, tracks, brakes (air, hydraulic and electrical), transmissions (manual, power shift, automatic), hydraulic systems, cooling systems, and snow removal equipment.
This position will prepare new equipment for use within the 14 highway divisions which includes but is not limited to installing: bodies on truck chassis, brooms on wheel tractors, mowers on tractors, lights, reflectors, decals, or other safety devices, and hydraulic accessories. Other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

Experience in performing automotive and light/or heavy equipment repair.
Experience using techniques and methods involved in determining and solving mechanical, electrical and electronic problems.
Demonstrated ability to use precision measuring devices along with computer driven diagnostic equipment.
Experience in modifying equipment and installing after-market upgrades.
Demonstrated ability to read and comprehend technical and instructional manuals, repair, and maintenance information data from computer web sites.
Additional Expectations
A valid North Carolina commercial class “A” driver’s license with “N” & “P” endorsements is required within 360 days of hire.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two (2) years of experience in the area of assignment, or a sufficient year-for-year combination of education and experience in the repair work to which assigned; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Necessary Special Qualifications
May require current certification by the EPA as a Type I, II, III or Universal technician as required by 40 CFR part 82, subpart F.
