Wabash County Government Correctional Officer in Wabash, Indiana

Incumbent serves as Correctional Officer for Wabash County Jail, responsible for supervising and monitoring daily activities of detainees and maintaining security and order within the facility.

DUTIES:

Maintains interior and exterior security of Jail facility, including conducting routine security inspections of facility and equipment, searching detainees and cell areas, monitoring audio and video equipment, inspecting incoming and outgoing inmate personal property, arranging visitation and release of detainees.

Assists with booking procedures of detainees, including searching detainees for weapons and contraband, photographing, and fingerprinting detainees. Performs proper procedures in releasing detainees out of facility.

Supervises and monitors detainees in allowable activities, such as meals, work, and recreation activities, sleeping, telephone calls, commissary purchases, counsel, church groups, and family visitations. Ensures personal hygiene of detainees and cleanliness of cell areas, accounting for all cleaning supplies and equipment issued to detainees and distributes items, such as laundry, and commissary sheets. Distributes meals and medication according to Department regulations.

Transports detainees to various locations as needed, including searching detainees, operating two-way radio to receive and transmit messages to appropriate personnel, communicating with courts to ensure proper movement of detainees and documents, and delivering legal papers.

Ensures compliance with facility rules and regulations, records and reports inappropriate behavior to appropriate department personnel, and takes appropriate action to correct any problems that arise. Properly secures and/or physically restrains violent and uncontrollable detainees as situations demand. Prepares and maintains jail activity reports, prepares inmate record/photo file, inventories and processes personal property, photographs inmate, and enters and records information into computer as required.

Occasionally responds to emergencies on 24-hour basis from an off-duty status.

Assists inmates who do not have proper housing arrangements, as needed.

Performs a variety of administrative duties, including but not limited to, preparing reports, reviewing inmate packets, assisting transfer of inmates, calculating outdates, communicating with outside agencies, and preparing records, as directed.

Performs related duties as assigned.

I. JOB REQUIREMENTS AND DIFFICULTY OF WORK:

High school diploma/GED.

Must be at least 18 years of age.

Completion of Indiana Law Enforcement Academy training for Correctional Officers within one year of employment.

Possession of or ability to obtain and maintain possession of all required certifications, including, but not limited to, taser, first responder/CPR, and defensive tactics.

Ability to meet all hiring requirements, including passage of a drug test.

Working knowledge of department practices, policies and procedures, rules and regulations governing county penal custody operations, jail security and safety practices and procedures, inmate classification guidelines, and law enforcement methods and ability to apply such knowledge to a variety of interrelated processes, tasks and operations.

Working knowledge of standard English grammar, spelling, and punctuation and ability to prepare and complete required reports within department deadlines.

Working knowledge of and ability to effectively apply evidence collection and preservation techniques.

Working knowledge of and ability to use all assigned department vehicles, equipment, and weapons, including computer, camera, radio, baton/nightstick, calculator, fingerprint equipment, tear gas/mace, handgun, handcuffs, restraint chair, and portable breathalyzer.

Working knowledge of radio frequencies, codes, rocedures, and limitations.

Ability to properly operate and maintain all assigned equipment and uniforms. jail/correctional officer

Ability to obtain and apply knowledge of applicable local, state, and federal laws, codes, ordinances, and accepted police procedures.

Ability to deal swiftly, rationally, and decisively with potentially violent individuals in precarious situations, and take authoritative action applying appropriate discretion and common sense.

Ability to speak clearly and distinctly, hear and be heard and understood when communicating in person, by radio, or by telephone.

Ability to obey all written and oral orders and directives from department superiors.

Ability to perform essential functions of position without posing a direct threat to health and safety of self and other individuals in the workplace.

Ability to protect oneself from contracting infectious diseases by avoiding high risk environments and by having knowledge of and utilizing universal health precautions.

Ability to provide public access to, or maintain confidentiality of, department information and records according to state requirements.

Ability to comply with all employer and department policies and work rules, including, but not limited to, attendance, safety, drug-free workplace, and personal conduct.

Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with co-workers, other County departments, court personnel, law enforcement agencies, doctors offices, bail bond personnel, and the public, including being sensitive to professional ethics, gender, cultural diversities, and disabilities.

Ability to work alone with minimum supervision and with others in a team environment.

Ability to work on several tasks at the same time and work rapidly for long periods, occasionally under time pressure.

Ability to understand, memorize, retain, and carry out written or oral instructions and present findings in oral or written form.

Ability to compare and observe difference and similarities between data, people, and/or things.

Ability to coordinate and make determinations and/or take action based on data analysis and create data to discover facts or develop concepts or interpretations.

Ability to apply knowledge of people and/or locations and perform arithmetic calculations. jail/correctional officer

Ability to regularly work evening and/or weekend hours, occasionally work irregular/extended hours, and occasionally travel out of town to transport detainees and/or training, sometimes overnight.

Ability to occasionally respond to emergencies on 24-hour basis from an off-duty status.

Possession of a valid Indiana drivers license and demonstrated safe driving record.

II. RESPONSIBILITY:

Incumbent performs duties according to established departmental policies and procedures, with work priorities determined by supervisor and/or formal schedule. Decisions are always determined by specific instructions or existing, well-established policies and procedures. Errors in work are primarily prevented through prior instruction from supervisor and/or legally defined procedures. Undetected errors could result in loss of time to correct, loss of money to department and/or endangerment to self or others.
