Job Summary

Under general supervision, is responsible for performing semi-skilled work of a routine nature in the operation and minor maintenance of a light to medium-sized truck. Exercises no supervision.

Work Schedule

Dead Animal Retrieval; 6:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.; Saturday, Sunday, Monday, and Wednesday

Essential Job Functions

  • Collects refuse from park grounds.

  • Responds to calls for the pick-up of dead animals and prepares daily reports of animals picked up.

  • Performs labor and maintenance duties, including loading and unloading truck, frequently lifting and carrying equipment or materials weighing up to 50 pounds.

  • Cleans and inspects the vehicle to ensure proper maintenance and safe operating condition.

  • Operates flat-bed, stakebody, pick-up, light cargo, or water sprinkler truck and simple attachments such as pumps and tow light trailers.

  • Operates trucks used to haul laborers, materials, and light equipment to road maintenance and construction sites.

  • Operates truck spray units used in insect and rodent control.

  • Performs related duties and fulfills responsibilities as required.

Job Requirements

  • Formal or informal training which ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance.

  • One (1) year of professional driving experience.

  • Valid Class "C" Texas Driver's License.

  • Unless otherwise stated, applicants are permitted to substitute two years of related full-time experience for one year of higher education or one year of related higher education for two years of experience in order to meet the minimum requirements of the job. One year of full-time experience is defined as 30 or more hours worked per week for 12 months. One year of higher education is defined as 30 credit hours completed at an accredited college or university.

  • Applicants selected for employment with the City of San Antonio in this position must receive satisfactory results from pre-employment drug testing and background checks. If required for the position, a physical, motor vehicle record evaluation, and additional background checks may be conducted.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of traffic laws, ordinances, and regulations involved in vehicle operation.

  • Knowledge of safety practices and procedures.

  • Skill in operating light trucks, light trailers, and related automotive equipment.

  • Skill in operating hoists, drums, and other auxiliary equipment frequently attached to trucks.

  • Skill in utilizing a two-way radio.

  • Ability to interpret and follow simple instructions.

  • Ability to learn the geography of the City and assigned routes.

  • Ability to perform all the physical requirements of the position, with or without accommodations.

  • Working conditions are in a shop or outside environment with frequent exposure to temperature extremes, dust; damp/wet surfaces, and high noise level.
