The HR STEEL Center Student Employee will gain real life working knowledge of Human Resources, benefits, payroll and pension administration information and processes for a large employer in a professional setting. This internship provides students exposure to HR business support functions including:

  • compensation & benefits,

  • healthcare administration,

  • payroll administration

  • pension (defined benefit and defined contribution plans) administration,

  • leave management administration,

  • labor/employee relations,

  • learning & development, and

  • recruiting.

This role provides administrative support via phone for HR services, data entry of transactions, and resolves inquiries & requests received from U. S. Steel’s employees and retirees.

Responsibilities:

  • Answer inbound phone calls from employees, retirees and company personnel regarding various benefit, payroll, and general HR matters.

  • Help participants understand their benefit options via phone and assist employees and retirees in making benefit elections online.

  • Assist employees via phone to navigate employee benefits and payroll self-service websites and other related technologies & promote the usage of these systems.

  • Enter benefit elections on behalf of employees and retirees, as needed.

  • Initiate case management for business processes.

  • Manage outbound call assignments to inform participants of issue resolution.

  • Contact participants via phone to relay time-sensitive information for benefit, payroll and HR matters, as needed.

  • Handle retiree data management requests via phone for address changes, banking updates, power of attorney documents, and pension verifications.

  • Keep leadership (direct supervisor) advised of potential challenges and recommend/implement solutions as appropriate.

Requirements:

  • Pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Human Resources, Healthcare Administration or related area of study.

  • GPA of a 3.0 or higher.

  • Fast learner committed to meeting deadlines.

  • High-energy individual accustomed to moving at a fast pace in a progressive environment.

  • Mandatory attendance for 3-week new hire "Boot Camp" training starting approx. May 5 or May 12, 2025.

  • Must be available to work 8:00AM to 5:00PM EST Monday-Friday schedule (May through August).

  • Preferred availability to work part-time during subsequent Fall/Spring semester(s).

  • Preferred experience working in an office environment or customer service setting.

Rate: $20-$21/hr. This base salary range is a good faith estimate.
