The Institute of Biosciences and Technology (IBT) of Texas A&M Health Science Center is seeking highly skilled and motivated postdoctoral candidates to join the laboratory of Dr. Julian Hurdle, to pursue interdisciplinary research in host pathogen interactions and therapeutic discovery. The Hurdle lab conducts research in antibiotic resistance mechanisms from patient samples, collaborative discovery of anti-infective therapeutics, and bacterial pathogenesis.

Job Description Summary:

The Postdoctoral Research Associate will conduct research in the discovery and characterization of anti-infective therapeutics and bacterial pathogenesis focused on mechanisms underlying the gastrointestinal diseases and post-infection complications. Provide broad training to develop independent, highly motivated scientists in an outstanding collaborative environment that integrates basic and translational sciences.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Appropriate PhD in Biology, Genetics, Pathology, Microbiology, infectious Diseases, Host Pathogen Interactions, Molecular Biology, or related science.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Must be literate in the English language and able to comprehend and follow both written and verbal instructions.

  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills in English.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Laboratory research experience in molecular biology, microbiology, biochemistry and animal models of infectious diseases are preferred. Applicants should have strong interest in laboratory research.

  • Additional experimental formats in the laboratory include tissue culture for in vitro experimentation (major emphasis) and in vivo animal work (major emphasis).

  • A record of published work that is commensurate with experience.

  • Proficient in standard molecular biology laboratory techniques, such as RT-qPCR, Western blotting, tissue culture, immunoprecipitations, ELISA, tissue staining, fluorescence microscopy, and flow cytometry.

Essential Duties/Tasks:

  • Research Experiments - Responsible for evaluation, selection, and application of standard techniques. Will conduct standard molecular biology laboratory techniques, such as RT-qPCR, Western blotting, tissue culture, immunoprecipitations, ELISA, tissue staining, fluorescence microscopy, flow cytometry, animal experimentation, cell biology and genomics.

  • Research Data - Keeps detailed records of data. Uses computers and laboratory equipment to perform data analysis, statistical analysis, technical evaluation and presentation of research experiments and results. Evaluates and summarizes results for insertion in scientific publications and presentations.

  • Collaborations - Conducts literature searches and reviews, attends seminars, lab meetings and journal clubs. Participates in joint projects involving faculty, lab personnel and graduate students. Contribute as participant in research grant proposals, paper reviews, and provide publishable reports for journal presentation. This will include library research into new approaches.

  • Laboratory Maintenance - Installs, operates, and/or repairs research equipment. Assists with maintaining lab equipment, stocks, and ordering supplies and equipment.
