Indian Health Service Nurse (OB) in United States

Summary The purpose of the Nurse (OB) position is to provide professional OB nursing care to patients in a general hospital and ambulatory care setting. There may not be immediate vacancies at all locations. This position requires licensure as a registered nurse and experience as stated in OPM regulations. Incumbent is required to work rotational shifts, night, days, weekends and holidays. Responsibilities These positions will be located within the Great Plains Area / Indian Health Service. There MAY NOT be immediate vacancies at all locations. Interested applicants should check with the local Administrative Office concerning immediate employment needs. The purpose of this position is to provide comprehensive care to pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients within the Great Plains Area. Duties: Assesses patient care needs through physical, psychosocial, educational and discharge needs specific to pregnancy, laboring, post-partum OB/GYN, surgical and newborn patients and determines priorities of care based on assessment. Plans and implements nursing interventions based on the plan of care and evaluates effectiveness to ensure that care plans are completed according to Acute Care Standards and based on the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual needs of patients. Administers therapeutic measures as prescribed by the physician such as medications, treatments, procedures, intravenous fluids and blood transfusions adhering to current scientific knowledge including principles of safety and infection control. GS-07 A Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing and eligibility under the Superior Academic Achievement provision (https://www.opm.gov/policy-data-oversight/classification-qualifications/general-schedule-qualification-policies/#url=General-Policies) OR A Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing and at least one full year of professional nursing experience (equivalent to the GS-5 grade level).Experience at this level is performed under general supervision and work is reviewed periodically by another RN; Provides professional nursing care to patients, reviewing history of medical care, assessing current health conditions and evaluating ability to self-care. Provide clinical and procedural nursing interventions administering medication in accordance with the plan of care and assisting providers with procedures. OR A diploma or associate degree in professional nursing and two full years of professional nursing experience. Examples of experience include: assess and care for the nursing needs of OB patients and other types of patients as assigned; develop plans of care to meet the needs of assigned patients; recognize adverse signs and symptoms and reacting swiftly in emergency situations; basic knowledge of triaging patients; plan with minimal assistance in scheduling and providing comprehensive nursing care in the OB Department. GS-09 One full year of professional nursing experience (equivalent to the GS-7 grade level or above) and possession of a diploma, associate degree, or Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing from a professional nursing program. Examples of experience include: Provides professional nursing care principles, practices and procedures required to assess needs of patients; knowledge of pharmaceuticals, their desired effects, side effects, and complications of their use; recognizing adverse signs and symptoms which are not always apparent and to react promptly in emergency situations including the implementation of life saving procedures; providing counseling, guidance and health instruction to patients; and identifies disease entities in order to recognize complications and therapeutic nursing interventions required. OR A master's degree in professional nursing. GS-10 One full year of specialized experience that has equipped me with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. This specialized experience is related to the work of the position and equivalent to at least the GS-09 level in the Federal service as described in the vacancy announcement. Examples Include: provide nursing care, triage patients, recognize and intervene in acute life-threatening situations, cardiac and respiratory failure management in medical, surgical, and obstetrical patients; interpret data about the patient's status in order to identify the patient care needed; independently plan, schedule and provide comprehensive nursing care in the OB Department. Time In Grade (Merit Promotion Candidates Only) Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level.
