Summary:Performs specialized work as it pertains to public safety and recreational work in enforcing rules, regulations, and preventing injuries at Frederick County Parks and Recreation aquatic facilities.

Essential Functions

  • Monitor water chemistry efficiently using approved testing methods;

  • Rescue bathers in distress; apply first aid and resuscitation as needed;

  • Ensure safety of patrons through education of safe aquatic practices;

  • Maintain the cleanliness standards of the pool and its facility by performing all maintenance and cleaning tasks assigned to the specifications required;

  • Carry out pool opening and closing on a rotating basis;

  • Assist with daily pool admissions, swim lessons, paddle boat operations, and swim team practices/meets when assigned;

  • Report any problems/disturbances to immediate supervisor on duty;

  • Be punctual and prepared to begin guard duty as scheduled;

  • Understand and implement emergency action plans;

  • Enforce pool rules and regulations; and,

  • Maintain positive communication as you serve as a liaison between Frederick County Parks and Recreation and the general public.

Typical Qualifications

Requirements:

Certificates, Licenses and/or Registrations: All part-time Lifeguard must possess the following certifications, licenses and or registrations:

  • American Red Cross Lifeguard;

  • Standard First Aid;

  • CPR for the Professional Rescuer Certification; and,

  • Water Safety Instructor (WSI) or other advanced certification preferred but not required.

Experience: Incumbents must be at least fifteen (15) years of age by application date.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of pool systems operations including filtration systems, automatic vacuum, equipment safety, and chemical use;

  • Knowledge of aquatic safety principles and use of safety/rescue equipment;

  • Ability to recognize patron problems as they relate to water activity;

  • Posses positive attitude and excellent communication skills; and,

  • Ability to work a flexible work schedule, including: nights, weekends and holidays.

Physical Demands: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job.

Walking, talking, stooping, kneeling, bending, reaching, swimming, floating, treading, sitting, floating, treading, standing, and gripping. Incumbent may be required move and lift materials over 25 pounds. (boxes, equipment, etc.) for extended periods of time; position requires the ability to stand and walk for long periods of time.

Environmental Demands: Indoor and outdoor work is conducted in variable weather conditions – including extreme heat/cold. Exposed to high or low temperatures, humid conditions, and other unfavorable weather conditions throughout the pool season.
