Description

Summary: Performs routine, unskilled manual work.

Essential Functions

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: The requirements for this position include, but are not limited to, those outlined below.   • Operates trash compactor and other baling/compactor equipment;

  • Provides traffic control at convenience site;

  • Performs inspections of incoming debris and direct citizens to proper disposal area;

  • Polices refuse and recycling collection areas;

  • Provides upkeep of convenience site and landfill grounds, including but not limited to litter control, fence mending, mowing, raking and snow and ice removal;

  • Works the Regional Tire Operations Program sorting and grinding tires, operates the rim buster and, provides general upkeep of the area;

  • Performs minor preventative maintenance of equipment;

  • Picks up paper and debris on public property and streets;

  • Paints buildings and equipment;

  • Assembles equipment;

  • Loads and unloads gravel, dirt, timber, chemicals and other materials, tools and equipment;

  • Digs shallow trenches and ditches, and cleans and repairs catch basins;

  • Assists with traffic control and off-loading during special events; and,

  • Performs related duties as assigned.

Typical Qualifications

Requirements:

Education: Some high school education preferred.

Experience:

  • One (1) year experience in the performance of heavy manual work is preferred; and,

  • Prior experience working in all weather conditions.

Other Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Ability to perform manual labor. Ability to understand and follow specific oral instructions;

  • Ability to operate small engine equipment (mowers, weed eaters, etc.);

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and the general public; and,

  • Ability to work in unfavorable weather conditions, emergency situations and work flexible schedules including holiday/weekends and be dependable.

Certificates, Licenses, and/or Registrations:

  • Must possess and maintain a valid Driver’s License.

Supplemental Information

Physical Demands: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job. Requires physical effort working almost exclusively with moving and lifting items up to 80 pounds for an extended period of time, and walking and standing for extended periods of time, talking, stooping, sitting, kneeling, bending, reaching and gripping. Position requires being on call for emergencies and non-business hours and work flexible schedules – including holidays, weekends and during snow storms/other emergencies.

Environmental Conditions: Indoor and outdoor work is conducted in variable weather conditions – including extreme heat/cold. Exposed to high or low temperatures, humid conditions, and other unfavorable weather conditions throughout the year.
