Description
The Position
San Mateo County Health is looking for a well-qualified individual for the position of Family Partner Support Worker I/II-Behavioral Health-Spanish Speaking Required to, under immediate supervision, provide support, wellness/recovery and educational services to family/caregivers of behavioral health and recovery or family health program services; participate as a member of our service provision teams; and perform related duties as assigned.
There is currently one regular vacancy in the Behavioral Health and Recovery Services Division for the Central Youth Team, located in San Mateo. The position requires travel throughout the county to families' homes, assisting them in accessing community resources, and attending IEPs, CFTs and other meetings.
Responsibilities
This Family Partner will provide peer support to families and assist in identifying community resources that focus on wellness, resiliency and recovery in order to enhance health and family life satisfaction. Family Partners collaborate with family members of clients and staff to develop treatment goals that are based on consumer and family strengths.
This Family Partner will support the family members of clients 6-18 years old. The Family Partner will be a full-time staff member that works closely to support the family members in order to improve the wellness and recovery of the client and family. This position requires working some after hours, between 5:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. when needed.
This Family Partner will work closely with the clinical team, with a family member perspective; support families when their loved one is entering mental health treatment; provide orientation to psychiatric services and the behavioral health system; supporting family members to access community resources and supports such as NAMI and Al-Anon; share parts of their own story as a family member of someone who has or is receiving mental health or substance use services, as appropriate; and facilitate psycho-educational and/or support groups with family members. Current members of the Central Youth Team include: four clinicians/clinical case managers; and three Psychiatrists.
The Ideal candidate will possess:
Life experience as a parent or caregiver of a child/youth or 6-18 year old, who has experienced behavioral health challenges.
Experience using their life experience as a parent or caregiver to support and assist parents and families whose child/youth or 6-18 year old have experienced behavioral health, juvenile justice and/or substance use issues.
Experience in effectively interacting and communicating with caregivers and family members of youth with mental health or substance use challenges.
Experience working in juvenile detention settings and/or with youth on probation.
Experience working with the Hispanic, Latino and other diverse communities.
Knowledge of the Individualized Education Plan (IEP) process.
Fluency in both English and Spanish (required), with demonstrated experience providing services in Spanish.
Depending on qualifications, this vacancy may be filled at the I or II level.

Qualifications
Education and Experience:
Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and skills is qualifying. A typical way of gaining the knowledge and skills is:
Peer Support Specialist II: At least one year of experience providing peer support services within the assigned program.
Knowledge of:
Problems, needs, attitudes and behavior patterns of the client population and of the total community served.
Basic needs and difficulties faced by ethnically diverse consumers, caregivers and families.
Identification of social and community resources and how to connect individuals to these resources.
Techniques for group and individual counseling.
Basic case management processes.
Perform clerical support work with accuracy, speed, and minimal supervision.
Techniques for effectively representing the County in contacts with the general public, other agencies, community groups, and various business, professional, educational, and regulatory organizations.
Techniques for providing a high level of customer service by effectively dealing with the public, clientele, and staff.
Basic recordkeeping principles and practices.
Modern office practices, methods, and computer equipment and applications related to the work.
Skill/Ability to:
Address the client population’s unique needs in a culturally sensitive manner.
Relate and communicate effectively with the community served.
Establish, maintain, and foster positive and effective relationships with clients, their families and/or caregivers and others contacted in the course of work.
Learn and understand the organization and operation of the assigned department and program.
Respond to and effectively prioritize multiple phone calls and requests for service.
File materials alphabetically, chronologically, and numerically.

Enter and retrieve data from a computer with sufficient speed and accuracy to perform assigned work.
Use tact, initiative, prudence, and independent judgment within general policy, procedural, and legal guidelines.
Write clear and comprehensive reports.
Maintain confidentiality
Stand and walk for extended periods of time and lift and carry equipment and supplies used in the course of the work.
Complete 20 hours of continuing education every two years to maintain certification.
Additional Qualifications:
Must meet the experience requirements established by the funding source of assignment.
Funding Qualifications:
Must be a parent or caregiver of a consumer of mental health services to meet the Mental Health Services Act (MHSA) funding requirement.
License/Certification:
Peer Support Specialist I: Proof of completion of Peer Support Specialist training AND within eighteen (18) months from date of hire, obtain Certification as a Medi-Cal Peer Support Specialist.
Peer Support Specialist II: Certification as a Medi-Cal Peer Support Specialist issued by the California Mental Health Services Authority (CalMHSA).
Some positions may require possession of a valid California driver license or equivalent; or the ability to provide suitable transportation, as approved by the appointing authority.

Candidates who pass the application screening will be invited to a panel interview (weight: 100%). Depending on the number of applicants, an application appraisal of education and experience may be used in place of other examinations or further evaluation of work experience may be conducted to group applicants by level of qualification. All applicants who meet the minimum qualifications are not guaranteed advancement through any subsequent phase of the examination. All examinations will be given in San Mateo County, California and applicants must participate at their own expense.
