Position Overview

This position is a critical role within the National Employee Benefit Practice and will lead Analytics and Underwriting across United States.  As the Director of Analytics and Underwriting you will be responsible developing, maintaining and training on best-in-class financial deliverables for current and prospective large clients with complex, primarily self-funded benefit programs. Financial deliverables include financial and contractual analysis, claims utilization analysis and modeling, renewal projection and premium rate analysis and modeling.

Job Responsibilities

  • Create in best class client deliverables that will be leveraged by EB account teams, to include but not limited to:

  • Fully insured underwriting

  • Market review analysis

  • Renewal rate and funding projections and modeling

  • Analysis of claims utilization

  • Rate and Contribution analysis

  • Benchmarking

  • Financial funding analysis, e.g. fully insured versus self-funded

  • IBNR and lag analyses

  • Multi-year technical claims review with utilization metrics, gap in care, cost modeling and benchmarking

  • Minimum Value Calculator (Health Care Reform)

  • Analytical tools and templates to develop alternative strategies, plan modeling and cost reduction opportunities. When necessary, develops custom illustrations to present financial metrics according to client preferences.

  • Lead office adoption of Dashboards ensuring all eligible clients have/receive Dashboards

  • Enhance the Dashboard to be more consultative with Exec Summary, highlights and important notes, not just data

  • Conduct Dashboard Training for new team members

  • Review user interface of Contribution model to make simpler for service team to input. Conduct training.

  • Drive PowerBI dashboard V2.0 build out

  • Review existing tools/templates & ID opportunity for enhancement with client understanding/presentation at core

  • Develop and facilitate trainings and provide ongoing support around tools and templates.

  • Recognize the need for and guides development of new analytical tools or innovative solutions as the marketplace changes.

  • Responsible for the financial analytics delivery for our more complex self-funded accounts

  • Lead highly complex client projects involving the design, funding, pricing, implementation, and management of a full array of health and group benefit programs.

  • Connects client’s business metrics to benefit program performance.

  • Communicates results, identified key issues, assess implication, develops recommendation, and leads the client through the process of determining practical action steps.

  • Identifies best practices and creates intellectual capital that is leveraged across the organization.

  • Leverages knowledge to promote World and to grow market presence through public speaking, media quotes, published articles and membership. Leadership role in business organization.

  • Finalizes client letters, reports and presentations; capable of signing all actuarial correspondence/attestations in accordance with professional standard.

  • Partner with Senior Account Executives and Health Population Management Director to formulate World Insurance strategy and deliverables around data and analytics, including data aggregation vendor.

  • Support Public Sector clients with self-funded accounts

  • Using a Monte Carlo simulation, to assess an Employer's risk at various Stop-Loss levels. Adding Employer specific data and demographics, compare expected catastrophic claims to current experience

  • Develops reserves for active health care liabilities

  • Displays a thorough understanding of health care reserves from all plan designs and considers interaction between active and retiree plan reserves as it applies to ABHP’s with retiree rollover features

    Underwriting Requirements

  • Underwrite fully insured medical/dental/vision renewals.

  • Project self-funded health and pharmacy costs for self-funded clients.

  • Ability to model different plan design adjustments and corresponding impact to current and/or future rates.

  • Ability to model enrollment migration, seasonality impacts, employee contribution scenarios and other adjustments to health plan cost build-up.

  • Demonstrates the ability to interpret initial results and suggests modifications based on plan experience large claims, data outliers and other anomalies.

  • Communicates results, identifies key issues, assesses implications and describes methodology to the client Benefits/Human Resources contact as well as their Finance team contact.

  • Develops client-ready financial analysis, reports and presentations.

    Required Experience

  • Health and welfare consulting experience: 7+ years of industry experience (carrier or brokerage consulting)

  • Project/client/financial management experience

  • Business development experience, including competitor and market knowledge a plus

  • Additional formal or informal responsibilities may include People management or mentoring

     Education

  • Bachelor’s degree

  • FSA/ASA (Fellow of the Society of Actuaries or Associate of the Society of Actuaries) preferred
