Job Summary

Under immediate supervision, is responsible for planning and implementing learning experiences in specialized curricular programs such as outdoor learning, creative movement, dance, health and wellness, or physical agility. Collects and inputs assessment data on children's progress. May exercise functional supervision.

This position is funded by sales tax that has been approved by the citizens of San Antonio for a limited time period. This position, therefore, is subject to at-will employment status, and is unclassified and has no disciplinary appeal rights to the Municipal Civil Service Commission.

Essential Job Functions

  • Leads planning and implementation of lessons for designated program.

  • Provides lesson plans to supervising educator in a timely manner for review and approval.

  • Prepares and maintains learning environment in alignment with program guidelines and licensing requirements.

  • Secures needed materials and supplies in a timely manner in accordance with procurement processes.

  • Observes student's progress and communicates with supervising educator.

  • Participates in ongoing professional development activities and specialized training to increase knowledge and skills in designated program area.

  • Prepares, adapts, and delivers instruction to students in groups and individually.

  • Actively interacts with children, engages in powerful interactions, participating as partners in play, and supporting and extending learning.

  • Maintains a clean and organized learning environment.

  • Supervises children using guidance strategies appropriate for young children.

  • Maintains open communication with parents. Builds relationships with students to create a positive, safe, and welcoming school culture.

  • May be required to lift and position students with physical disabilities, control behavior through physical restraint, and assist non-ambulatory students.

  • In the case of an emergency situation, may be required to lift and carry students weighing up to 50 pounds to move students during dangerous situations

  • Performs related duties and fulfills responsibilities as required.

Job Requirements

  • Two (2) years of education from an accredited college or university.

  • Two (2) years of experience working in early childhood related positions.

  • Child Development Associate Certification (CDA) or ability to obtain within six (6) months of employment.

OR

  • Twelve (12) of the forty-eight (48) hours of college credit in Education or Childhood Development from an accredited college or university.

  • Unless otherwise stated, applicants are permitted to substitute two years of related full-time experience for one year of higher education or one year of related higher education for two years of experience in order to meet the minimum requirements of the job. One year of full-time experience is defined as 30 or more hours worked per week for 12 months. One year of higher education is defined as 30 credit hours completed at an accredited college or university.

  • Applicants selected for employment with the City of San Antonio in this position must receive satisfactory results from pre-employment drug testing and background checks. If required for the position, a physical, motor vehicle record evaluation, and additional background checks may be conducted.

  • Skill in organizing, planning, and prioritizing work.

  • Skill in resolving conflicts and negotiating with others.

  • Ability to interpret and apply Federal, State, and local policies, procedures, laws, and regulations.

  • Ability to participate in current or long-range planning projects.

  • Ability to analyze information and evaluate results to choose best solution and solve problems.

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of information.

  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships both internally and externally.

  • Ability to perform all the essential functions of the position, with or without accommodations.

  • Ability to work primarily in a classroom environment, which may be indoors and outdoors.
