  • As a Health and Safety Business Partner, you’ll be supporting our varied, and fast paced, Communities & Mobility [SR1] Business Unit in UK & Ireland. This Business Unit works in a wide variety of environments in the local government and transport arena undertaking many different tasks and you will be supporting the Strategic and Operational Leadership and Project Delivery teams to deliver their work in a safe and compliant way.

  • You will engender a positive safety culture through active collaboration and partnering within Communities & Mobility. Raising the profile of health and safety, offering a proactive, solutions focussed approach, enabling colleagues to understand and manage health and safety successfully, whilst maintaining legal compliance based on risk profile.

  • You will act as the competent health and safety advisor and key interface for Communities & Mobility, whilst remaining a key part of the Corporate Health & Safety team, collaborating with colleagues and peers to create a harmonious and standardised team approach.

  • You’ll be an integral part of the continual development of Health and Safety at WSP, both at a Corporate and Business Unit level, as we strive toward our Zero Harm goal.

YOUR TEAM

We are looking for a passionate Health and Safety Practitioner to join our Corporate Health & Safety team. The Communities & Mobility Business Unit has grown to over 1,300 people and aspires to continued growth and development. The Business Unit contains multiple service lines, providing specialist design and advisory services and contains a wide range of designers, engineers, consultants and technical specialists serving the built and natural environment, from transport planning to highways design and maintenance. As a design consultancy, whilst much of our work is desk based, some colleagues work for long periods on site, undertake high risk activities or travel to high-risk countries; all require dedicated and tailored health and safety support in discharging our projects [SR2] .

As a dedicated Health and Safety Business Partner to the Business Unit, the role requires the provision of focussed, competent health and safety knowledge, experience and advice.

Duties include –

Leadership

  • providing key point of contact for health and safety matters relating to the Communities & Mobility Business

  • liaison with, and support to, the relevant Business Unit strategic and operational leadership teams

  • delivery of WSP UK Corporate and Business Unit specific health and safety objectives

  • development and delivery of health and safety training across the UK business

Compliance

  • driving health and safety culture and safety management system compliance

  • provision of competent advice and support to the Business Unit to help achieve successful implementation of UK health & safety legislation and policies

  • incident and accident investigation and managing data

  • internal health and safety assurance auditing (office and site) as well as operational, strategic and compliance auditing

  • ensuring continued compliance with ISO 45001

  • development and maintenance of assigned health and safety policy documents and tools held in our safety management system

  • providing advice and guidance in project reviews – including risk management and CDM 2015 expertise and compliance

Reporting

  • monitoring and reporting on key performance indicators (managing data, tracking and providing statistical analysis, and report compilation)

Communication

  • generating and cascading health and safety communications to the Business Unit

  • management and implementation of health and safety forums

Collaboration

  • create and deliver health and safety elements of project bid support

  • development and delivery of safety culture continuous improvement plan

  • health and safety advice and support for the identification, assessment and control of risk landscape

  • liaison with project teams and clients relating to site management, including safety tours and inspections

  • The role requires the successful candidate to –

  • be a passionate advocate of health and safety, and have the appetite to seek out and drive forward health and safety initiatives, independently or as part of a team, with a goal of continually improving health and safety outcomes for our colleagues

  • follow a process of continual professional development; being aware of, and in touch with any changes to relevant UK H&S legislation, Approved Codes of Practice and industry best practice standards

  • work as part of the wider WSP community liaising with, as appropriate, our UK colleagues, Business Unit / Discipline Operational Teams, Management Services Teams, Corporate Real Estate Team, Location Directors, H&S Representatives, Project Teams, and all other key stakeholders as appropriate

  • have a passion for health and safety. We can develop competence, but we cannot develop passion

  • have experience in a health and safety advisory role (experience in a technical / consulting company is ideal, but not essential)

  • hold a NEBOSH Health and Safety Diploma (or similar), or as minimum a NEBOSH Construction or General Certificate and are willing to learn and develop

  • understand the duties of Designers under CDM

  • have competence in managing and interpreting health and safety data, identifying risk and opportunities, and being able to action opportunities where appropriate

  • are a diligent, hard-working self-starter with initiative and ability to work within a diverse team environment across the UK and develop relationships and rapport with all stakeholders

  • have strong influencing skills to promote and ensure compliance and best practice in operational situations where it is essential to find a solution to the problem if risk is identified

  • possess excellent listening and communication skills with the ability to influence and interact with people at all levels in a diplomatic and persuasive manner

  • have training / presentation skills and experience or aptitude and willingness to learn in this area

  • thrive in a fast-paced working environment and can deliver against challenging deadlines, either individually or as part of a team

  • can work with and manage appropriately, sensitive and confidential information, dealing with all stakeholders with the highest level of respect and professionalism

  • have strong organisational skills – can effectively manage several projects concurrently, ensuring that deadlines are met

  • possess strong IT skills
