We are seeking an experienced individual to join our established GIS / digital team based in the UK The successful candidate will work alongside colleagues to develop digital and geospatial solutions across a range of sectors, including biodiversity, climate change, environmental impact, net zero, planning, renewable energy, transport, waste and water management.

Your work will be varied and challenging and will include the following:

  • Acting as a geospatial subject matter expert (SME) champion across WSP UK;

  • Taking the lead technical role in the delivery of future GIS and digital projects;

  • Contributing to geospatial technical innovation and development;

  • Leading new business development and proposal activities;

  • Potential mentoring and management of geospatial staff within WSP UK and

  • Writing and reviewing technical reports and presentations.

We expect that the successful candidate will split their time between home working and time spent in one of our UK offices.

YOUR TEAM

Our GIS and integrated digital teams deliver a wide spectrum of services including application development; database development; mobile mapping; remote sensing; technology consulting; spatial analysis; and web mapping. These services are provided to a range of high-profile customers in the UK and overseas. Our work is diverse and delivered across multiple sectors – including climate change, defence, energy transition and renewable energy, government, minerals, planning, power, transport, waste and water.

Recent examples include: the development of digital and geospatial solutions to enhance climate change assessment and resilience planning in the British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Grenada, Kazakhstan, Iraq, Turks & Caicos, and the Western Balkans; geospatial modelling of optimal sites for wind and solar farm sites in the UK, Middle East and Australia; development of web tools for strategic transport modelling in the UK and the Ukraine; work to improve the UK’s energy infrastructure, including strategic studies for Cadent, National Grid, Western Gateway and UK nuclear industry; and the development of GIS tools to improve water supply resilience in England, Bulgaria, Grenada and Qatar.

We will shortlist candidates using the following qualification and experience criteria:

Consulting experience

  • A MSc degree-level qualification (or equivalent) in Geographical Information Systems (GIS) or Geomatics and ideally a minimum of 10 years related work experience;

  • Acting as a senior technical specialist and leading GIS and digital elements of major UK or international development projects;

  • Prior experience of undertaking geospatial business development and proposal writing activities, and

  • Experience of mentoring and staff / team management (advantageous but not essential)

Technical skills and knowledge

  • Advanced knowledge of desktop ESRI ArcGIS, QGIS and/or FME analysis software;

  • Ability to create geospatial software applications using Arcpy, Python, SQL, Javascript, HTML and/or R/Shiny;

  • Experience of creating and managing web mapping solutions using ESRI or Open Source technology;

  • Database management skills and experience – ideally with SQL Server, PostgreSQL or MS Access;

  • Cloud computing experience using MS Azure would be an advantage.
