What will you do as an R&D Technologist II?

The R&D Technologist II routinely applies their skills to assist the R&D team with the development of new products through the assembly, alignment, testing and verification of new product prototypes.  The successful candidate will be responsible for documenting their findings and delivering against determined goals. This individual is expected to be familiar and experienced with electronic, mechanical or optical assembly and will be involved in defining the process of a new product being built and introduced into production.

Working as part of our global Technology (R&D) team, you will report to the Team Lead in a Product Design team and work at our Burnaby head office. 

  • Drives the production of prototype, beta and pre-production product builds by managing parts, performing build activities, testing products, and troubleshooting defective units

  • Works closely with Manufacturing Systems Engineering to ensure a smooth transition of products from R&D to Manufacturing

  • Understands and utilizes the tools and processes defined by the group to effectively carry out project work

  • Participates in regular design reviews and provides feedback on proposed designs

  • Produces task lists to breakdown project assignments into appropriate levels of detail

  • Manages delivery expectations against key project milestones 

  • Works closely with their team mitigating issues with solutions

  • Produces required technical reports and documentation

  • Proactively contributes to and implements continuous improvement initiatives

  • Configure and maintain alignment\calibration software settings

  • Drives the design of experiments and collection of statistical data

    What do you need to be successful?

  • Degree/diploma in Mechanical/Electronics or similar post-secondary education

  • 3-5 years working experience in an electronics or optics field, with mechanical assembly experience and excellent ability with hand tools

  • Knowledge of SolidWorks, reading/preparation of mechanical drawings

  • Basic understanding of GD&T (Preferred)

  • Knowledge of Python including reading/writing scripts for data mining and analysis (Preferred)

  • Knowledge of basic electronic circuits and have ability to read schematics, wiring diagrams and soldering (Preferred)

  • Experience with document control systems, part number/BOM management, and project/task/milestone scheduling and tracking

  • Experience with manufacturing processes involving optical assembly, alignment, calibration a strong asset 

  • Strong communication and writing skills

  • Familiarity with Google Workspace (formally G-suite) with the ability to produce and present clearly written reports and findings

  • Solid interpersonal skills are required to function appropriately in a team environment

  • Strong attention to detail and thoroughness to achieve quality of work to company standards.

  • Able to easily adapt to shifting priorities and manage time efficiently 

  • Familiarity with metrology is a strong asset

    BC/CALIFORNIA ROLES ONLY | Salary Range: $61,404 - $70,000 - $79,800

    Expected Salary: Our typical hiring range will be +/- 10% of the midpoint listed above. Factors influencing this decision include qualifications and market conditions for the role.
