Native American House
Job Summary
Reporting to the Director of the Native American House (NAH), assists in the development, implementation, coordination, assessment, and reporting of programs, services, and activities for the NAH that educate and promote a campus-wide understanding of the history, contributions, and issues/challenges of importance to American Indians, Alaska Natives (AIAN), and Indigenous communities. Works with the Director to manage programs and projects that increase educational attainment and retention among AIAN and Indigenous students, from matriculation to graduation.
Duties & Responsibilities
Programming
- Assist in developing, planning, and implementing educational, recreational, social, and cultural programs that promote the success of AIAN and Indigenous students and foster a better understanding of the needs and issues of students in higher education.
- Cultivate and support innovative programs and initiatives that celebrate the contributions and address the unique needs of AIAN and Indigenous students on campus.
- Build, foster, and maintain effective collaborative relationships with various academic and student affairs units and community partners to enrich awareness, transformational learning, and support related to AIAN and Indigenous issues on campus.
- Regularly attend meetings and events supporting AIAN and Indigenous students and student organizations, including working evening and weekend hours as needed.
- Assist in the preparation of budgets, progress reports, and operating procedures.
- Assist with developing and implementing programmatic assessment strategies.
- Assist with reviewing student data using various reporting systems, identifying trends, and evaluating factors such as retention, persistence, graduation rates, including programming and learning outcomes.
- Assist with maintenance of the in-house library and media collection, including assisting with operational procedures, collection development, purchase and evaluation.
Advising and Outreach
- Provide advising, outreach, and leadership development, especially to AIAN and Indigenous student groups, and engage them in Native American House activities.
- Help promote, publicize, and market activities and services of the Native American House on campus.
- Assist with developing, coordinating, and disseminating a cohesive Native American House communication strategy and sharing said information with relevant campus units.
- Serve as a representative of the Native American House on various campus committees, task forces, and work groups.
- Assist in planning and implementing activities during Indigenous Peoples\' Day, Native American Heritage Month, Native American House Congratulatory Ceremony, and other annual events sponsored by the Native American House.
- Assist in providing information, advocacy, referral, and other direct services to students, staff, and faculty seeking assistance.
- Serve as a resource person for students, staff, and faculty interested in AIAN and Indigenous issues and the services/functions of the Native American House.
Supervision, Administration, and Staff Development
- Help train, supervise, evaluate, and coordinate student staff and volunteers related to programming and Native American House operations.
- Assist in the production of programming, materials, resources, and activities related to AIAN and Indigenous student success and retention.
- In the absence of the Director, may assume responsibility and provide management for the operation of the Native American H use.
- Perform other duties as may be assigned by the Director.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor\'s degree. Two (2) years of work experience with program administration in an educational, private, and/or public setting.
- Demonstrated experience developing, planning, and implementing educational, recreational, social, and/or cultural programming.
- Experience with higher education program development, outreach, and/or engagement with AIAN and Indigenous organizations, communities, and/or individuals.
- Experience supervising and training students/entry-level staff (undergraduate and/or graduate students) and/or volunteers.
- Experience with campus and/or community outreach.
- Experience working with diverse student populations.
Preferred Qualifications
Master\'s Degree, preferably in higher education administration, college student personnel, counseling, or related field.
Sensitivity to, awareness of, and demonstrated experience with the educational, social, developmental, and cultural concerns of AIAN and Indigenous students.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (oral and written), with particular cultural knowledge, competence, and experience in working and communicating with AIAN and Indigenous peoples.
