JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

Penn State's Office of Physical Plant (https://opp.psu.edu) , Radiation Protection department is accepting applications for a Health Physicist opportunity!

With general direction from the Radiation Safety Officer, this position is responsible for helping to implement a wide variety of assigned areas of the University radiation protection program. This position primarily provides radiation safety related services to the university to support operations and research; and to ensure the university is compliant with federal / state regulations involving the use of radioactive materials and radiation producing equipment.

Primary duties include:

  • Provide health physics support to the University and applicable campuses; this includes routine contamination/radiation audits of laboratories, surveying incoming isotopes for delivery on campus, collecting radioactive waste, reviewing applications for use of radioactive material, and radiation-producing equipment safety.

  • Implement and assist with the EHS Radioactive Waste Management program.

  • Perform or assist in the performance of internal calibrations of contamination survey and radiation monitoring instrumentation.

  • Assist with implementation of dosimetry program.

  • Assist in implementing the EHS radioactive material space decommissioning service.

  • Provide support for the EHS Radioactive Material shipping service, including for material produced at the RSEC as well as for material that members of the PSU community have a need to transport or ship to any location.

  • Assist with implementing the EHS sealed source radioactive material and generally licensed radioactive material safety programs

  • Oversee EHS-Radiation Protection facilities – including laboratories, waste areas, and storage areas.

  • Respond as part of an emergency team to incidents involving radiation, radioactive materials, x-ray equipment, lasers, the Radiation Science & Engineering Center, and other emergencies.

Education and experience:

Minimally requires a Bachelor's degree, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Background check:

This position requires that you operate a motor vehicle as a part of your job duties. A valid driver’s license and successful completion of a motor vehicle records check will be required in addition to standard background checks.

In addition to this, within 6 months of hire, the successful candidate must obtain and maintain a Commercial Driver's License with Hazmat endorsement as well as a personal status of being trustworthy and reliable by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

The salary range for this position, including all possible grades is:

$61,800.00 - $89,600.00
