In Raytheon’s Guidance, Navigation and Control (GNC) department, we design, integrate, and optimize guidance, navigation, state estimation, and control algorithms to meet mission objectives. We support new business initiatives and help develop & execute technology roadmaps. Raytheon’s Flight Sciences department, within GNC is seeking a Principal Engineer to perform in the role of Aerodynamics Lead onsite in Tucson, AZ. This position is onsite and works in a closed environment but enjoys a 9/80 work schedule (every other Friday off) and a highly collaborative team environment.

What You Will Do

  • The Man-Portable Air Defense System (MANPADS) Aerodynamics Lead will apply knowledge of compressible aerodynamics and kinematic simulation to lead a small team of mixed skills to drive the airframe configuration to closure.

  • You will be responsible for developing an aerodynamics model using computational fluid dynamics (CFD), empirical data, and wind tunnel test data.

  • You will be responsible for planning and executing a wind tunnel test.

  • You will collaborate with program System Performance, Algorithm Development, Propulsion, Control-Actuation System (CAS) and Airframe design teams to support system level architecture trades related to airframe configuration (caliber, nosecone, canard, tail, configurations)

  • You will be the primary interface with the US Army customer and its contractors for communicating details related to program aerodynamic design and development

  • You will communicate status, accomplishments, issues, and required support to program leadership.

  • You will provide direction, oversight, and mentoring to team members and collaborate across disciplines to ensure system effectiveness.

Qualifications You Must Have

  • Typically requires a Bachelor’s in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) and a minimum of 8 years of prior Aerodynamics experience with flight vehicles.

  • Five (5) years of experience in aerodynamic configuration development and analysis.

  • Experience with at least two of the following: trade studies, performance assessment, aerodynamic model development, development of kinematic simulations, wind tunnel testing, and/or empirical CFD.

  • Experience coding in Matlab, C++ and/or Python

  • Active and transferable U.S. government issued Secret security clearance is required prior to start date. U.S. citizenship is required, as only U.S. citizens are eligible for a security clearance

Qualifications We Prefer

  • Advanced degree in Aerospace Engineering

  • Experience with high speed airframe design and environments

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to communicate effectively with senior stakeholders and other engineering disciplines

  • Ability to manage multiple competing priorities

  • Experience with mentoring and guiding small teams

The salary range for this role is 96,000 USD - 200,000 USD. The salary range provided is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels. RTX considers several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to, the role, function and associated responsibilities, a candidate’s work experience, location, education/training, and key skills.
