The RPI Engineers men's ice hockey team is a National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I college ice hockey program that represents R (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rensselaer_Polytechnic_Institute) ensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI). Job Summary

RPI is seeking top candidates to serve as the next Head Coach for Men's Hockey. The successful candidate will organize and direct the Men's Ice Hockey, Division I varsity intercollegiate sports program through the performance of coaching, recruiting, administrative, fundraising, and professional duties.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree

  • Five (5) years of experience in a related sport including 2 years of coaching experience

  • Valid US Driver’s License

Preferred Qualifications

Ideally, the candidate will have Division I coaching experience, including the recruitment of student athletes in a rigorous academic setting. Candidates that have been successful fundraisers for their programs are especially sought after.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge and understanding of all aspects of the specified sports program.

  • Knowledge of NCAA regulations and guidelines governing the recruitment and retention of student-athletes.

  • Knowledge of athletic recruitment methods and techniques.

  • Ability to lead and guide student-athletes in area of specialty.

  • Ability to make administrative/procedural decisions and judgments.

  • Ability to initiate, develop and maintain appropriate contacts.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.

  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

  • Knowledge of financial/business analysis techniques.

  • Ability to read, understand, follow, and enforce safety procedures.

  • Ability to foster a cooperative work environment.

  • Skill in budget preparation and management.

  • Ability to identify athletic skill levels, and gauge the potential admissibility of student athletes

Job Duties

  • Coaching/Teaching: Provide the team with the training, instruction, and support to compete at the highest levels while striving to combine passion and competitiveness to create an encouraging, supportive and competitive athletic environment. Utilize team workouts and individual skill sessions to assist students in reaching their potential.

  • Program Competitiveness – Conference: Ensure team competitiveness within their league as judged by competitive results (close losses), a winning record (.500 or better). Overall: Ensure team competitiveness within their NCAA Division as judged by competitive results (close losses), a winning record (.500 or better) and a strong strength of schedule.

  • NCAA Compliance - Ensure NCAA, conference and department compliance rules and regulations are understood and adhered to. The submission of all necessary tests and forms (annual, recruiting, etc.) should be submitted as per each deadline and any rules violations must be communicated with the Compliance Coordinator immediately.

  • Recruiting: Recruit highly qualified student-athletes. Use all methods available such as phone calls, personal visits, off campus evaluations, official (& unofficial) visits, camp evaluations, and electronic communication (email & fax). Communicate all recruiting information to the Office of Enrollment Management in a timely manner.

  • Financial Focus: Prepare an annual budget to support the operation of the program. Follow all department procedures and Institute policies regarding advancement of money and the reconciling of trips. Spend within the limits of your ICA, LGR and fundraising budgets. Work with the Assoc AD and Business Manager on all financial matters. Meet fundraising targets and assist Institute Advancement with the cultivation of alumni and supporters of the program.

  • Administrative Responsibility: Demonstrate administrative acumen and responsible leadership in the execution of administrative duties. Is on time, maintains regular/appropriate office hours, returns calls/emails in a timely manner and maintains a clean and orderly office. Proper completion of these duties is considered essential for continued employment.

  • Professional Conduct: Demonstrate professional conduct and attire consistent with the professional responsibilities of the position of coach, while in the acts of coaching, recruiting and otherwise representing the department and the Institute.

  • Institute Responsibility: Be available for admissions visitation days, student open houses, medalist days, accepted student days, State-of-the-Institute addresses, and other Institute events as requested. Support community service opportunities when possible.

  • Academic Achievement: Set and maintain academic expectations that are consistent with Department and Institute goals, supporting and celebrating individual and team academic successes.

  • Secondary Duties: Fulfill secondary duties within the department (when applicable) with diligence and professionalism.

Shift

Non Standard Shift: The schedule includes significant participation outside of traditional business hours in order to accommodate games, practices, and various recruiting and other events.

Travel

Travel is a significant component of the position (greater than 25%)

Driving a Rensselaer vehicle for non-passenger use

Starting Salary/Rate

Expected hiring range: $275,000 - $325,000 per year

Pay transparency disclosure: The selected candidate’s salary will be determined based on factors that include the available budget, internal equity, and the final candidate’s qualifications, experience, education and other job-related credentials. This hiring range is provided as Rensselaer’s good faith estimate of the expected hiring range at the time of posting.
