Amazon Senior Product Compliance Manager, Global Trade Services in Tokyo, Japan

Description

We are seeking a Senior Product Compliance Manager to oversee import regulations and product safety for our import business within the organization. The primary responsibility is to ensure adherence to laws and regulations while maintaining import compliance and product safety standards for the diverse array of imported products.

The Product Compliance Team is headquartered in Seattle with teams also located outside United States, including APAC (Japan, Australia, Singapore), Europe, the Middle East, India, Latin America, etc. This team operates and collaborates closely with global teams to drive project initiatives forward.

Key job responsibilities

  • Conduct regulatory research to ascertain import requirements and compliance documentations to enable import of new product categories needed by the Business.

  • Collaborate with Business, Legal, Logistics, and other internal stakeholders, both within and outside Japan (including APAC, EU/UK, US, etc.), to promote the program effectively.

  • Develop and deliver training programs and educational materials to stakeholders to explain product safety laws and regulations requirements in a clear and understandable manner.

  • Comprehend internal systems and processes to enhance operational efficiency and partner with Tech and Product Teams for process design and or improvements.

  • Capable of collaborating with external test laboratories to promote product safety programs as needed.

  • Proficient in negotiating with relevant government authorities in collaboration with internal stakeholders when required.

  • Establish and maintain strong relationships with 3rd party consultants, test laboratories, industry associations, and other relevant stakeholders to stay informed of regulatory changes and industry trends.

  • Monitor and track key performance indicators (KPIs) related to product safety and compliance, providing regular reports and updates to internal stakeholders and senior leaders.

  • Continuously assess and improve the effectiveness of risk management framework, processes, procedures, and regulatory policies to enhance product safety and compliance outcomes.

A day in the life

The role involves researching import requirements for new product categories, collaborating with internal and external stakeholders, developing training materials on product safety regulations, optimizing internal systems, liaising with external test labs and government bodies, maintaining relationships with industry stakeholders, and monitoring key performance indicators related to product safety and compliance.

Additionally, the position requires continuous assessment and improvement of risk management frameworks and regulatory policies to enhance product safety outcomes.

Basic Qualifications

  • 6+ years of compliance, audit or risk management experience

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office products and applications at an advanced level

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent

  • Experience in product safety, preferably within the import/export industry.

  • In-depth knowledge of Japanese laws, regulations, and applicable technical standards pertaining to product safety, labeling, and compliance for imported products.

  • Fluent in Japanese and English, both verbal and written.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Project Management Professional (PMP) or equivalent certification

  • Experience leveraging technology and implementing lean principles / Six Sigma methodologies to drive process improvements or equivalent

  • Master's degree or equivalent

  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in the safety regulations of imported products, including familiarity with regulations such as the Product Safety Act (PSE, PSC, PSTG, PSLPG), the Food Sanitation Act (Food Contact Materials, Toys), the Household Products Quality Labeling Act, the Act on the Regulation of Hazardous Substances, or relevant industry standards.

  • Proficiency in data analysis, including the ability to analyze data using tools such as data dashboards, SQL, etc.

  • Excellent analytical skills with the capacity to evaluate and prioritize risks and formulate effective mitigation strategies.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal abilities, enabling effective collaboration and influence across all organizational levels.

  • Capable of acting decisively while maintaining attention to detail, deadlines, and reporting requirements.
