Director, Engineering - MCS Drug Substance Supply

What you will do

In this vital role you will be responsible for leading Engineering and Maintenance organization in support of ATO Drug Substance Manufacturing in B23 and B7, Cell Bank Operations in B30 and Quality Control in B25 as part of Manufacturing and Clinical Supply (MCS). You will partner with manufacturing, process development, safety and quality to ensure facility, utilities and process equipment requirements are met in compliance with internal and external regulations.

The Director of Engineering is responsible for the technical direction, leadership and strategy of the engineering and maintenance organization including, but not limited to, asset ownership, maintenance and calibration, reliability, and day to day support to a 7/24-hour operation. The Director of Engineering is responsible to deliver reliable and compliant clean utilities, maintenance programs, facility and equipment improvements as needed to enable MCS Long Range Supply Plans.

This position encompasses both a leadership role and a technical expert role within the Drug Substance Supply leadership team. The director will provide day to day management and leadership including mentoring, staff development and work prioritization for a team of direct and indirect reports. In addition, the director will provide input into department objectives and establishment of strategic direction within the MCS F&E Organization.

This is an onsite role located at Amgen Thousand Oaks, CA.

  • Resource allocation in alignment with strategic plans and priorities.

  • Ensures that area staff (regular and contracted) are qualified for assigned roles and trained to perform individual tasks.

  • Alerts senior management of critical quality, compliance, supply and safety risks.

  • Responsible for inspection readiness associated with engineering programs and GMP Requirements.

  • Perform management responsibilities associated to development, coaching and mentorship of engineering staff, as well as the performance evaluation of the team and performance management, as required.

  • Responsible for planning, developing, and maintaining of the department budget with strong focus on efficiency and ways of working to deliver the best value to Amgen.

  • Responsible for department capital portfolio prioritization, execution and cost-effective implementation.

  • Partner with global engineering functions such as Global Capital Projects and Project Controls to ensure strategic alignment, and compliant and safe execution of capital investments.

  • Ensures that organization-level decisions are science based, supported by data and scientific principles.

  • Anticipate complex challenges and needs maintaining strategic alignment with Amgen Long Range Plans.

  • Integrate the organization into the Amgen global networks to deliver value to the collective operations.

  • Creates a culture that nurtures and rewards creativity and innovation.

  • Fosters a culture that is equipped to manage change and transformation effectively.

Basic Qualifications:

Doctorate degree and 4 years of Engineering, Commissioning & Qualification or a related technical discipline experience

Or

Master’s degree and 8 years of Engineering, Commissioning & Qualification or a related technical discipline experience

Or

Bachelor’s degree and 10 years of Engineering, Commissioning & Qualification or a related technical discipline experience

In addition to meeting at least one of the above requirements, you must have at least 4 years experience directly managing people and/or leadership experience leading teams, projects, programs, or directing the allocation or resources. Your managerial experience may run concurrently with the required technical experience referenced above

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience leading complex and matrix organizations, projects, and programs

  • Excellent communication skills

  • Strong safety focused with a firm understanding of engineering diverse responsibilities, facilities and equipment maintenance.

  • Strong collaborator, problem solver and solution oriented

  • Demonstrated interpersonal and facilitation skills and ability to work in a collaborative team- based environment.

  • Extremely organized and thinks strategically to support key business decisions

  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and effectively set priorities

  • Proven experience leading successful teams in a 7/24 operation

  • Prior experience leading engineers or other technical professionals

  • Proven experience and track record of compliance in a highly regulated environment

  • Demonstrated ability to effectively lead and partner in a complex, matrixed organizations

  • Successful deployment of continuous improvement and innovation to deliver value

  • Demonstrated experience with conflict resolution, making disciplined decisions and handling multiple projects at one time.

  • Capabilities to hire, develop and lead a diverse workforce

  • Financial acumen to deploy initiatives that add shareholder value

  • Excellent communications skills, strong facilitation of talent, and executive presence to drive cross functional objectives

  • Strong analytical skills to identify potential improvement opportunities

  • Knowledge of industry trends (e.g., regulatory and compliance, technology, human performance programs, reliability and asset management, etc.) to stay at the forefront of technology implementation

  • Represent Amgen with outside firms, technical societies and regulatory bodies.

  • Ability to develop, implement and use tools to drive innovation in meeting business needs; establish measure and evaluate performance metrics, taking actions based on results

The expected annual salary range for this role in the U.S. (excluding Puerto Rico) is posted. Actual salary will vary based on several factors including but not limited to, relevant skills, experience, and qualifications.
