SUMMARY: Assist special needs for students who are Deaf/Hard of Hearing in a variety of programs. This includes, but is not limited to the following tasks: use of sign language to communicate with student, note taking for student, monitoring support use of DM equipment, orientation of schedule and classroom locations, adaptation of materials to complete assignments, organization of materials, facilitate language acquisition through modeling, questioning and expansion.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

  1. Assist students with classroom learning and/or recreational activities. Guide them in their learning expectations, assignments or tasks. Perform tutoring with the use of Sign Language to ensure reinforcement of academic concepts, social and behavioral skills. Help with organization of classroom materials for student. Assist students with adherence to following classroom structures and routines. Support behavior plan implementation.

  2. Facilitate language acquisition through modeling, questioning and expansion through the use of sign language.

  3. Assist with students with personal hygiene and care. Assist with students’ physical problems such as suctioning, trachea, tube feeding, diapering, etc. Sanitize, disinfect, and clean learning environment and general work areas of all bodily fluids.

  4. Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND RELATED WORK EXPERIENCE:

• High School Diploma or equivalent.

• Proficient in Conceptually Accurate Signed English (CASE)/Pidgeon Signed English (PSE).

• Preferred experience in working with children who have Special Needs.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS or CERTIFICATIONS:

• Criminal background check required for hire.

SALARY INFORMATION:

All Classified positions are paid on an hourly basis. All Newly hired classified employees are placed initially on Step 1 of the pay grade for their position. Classified employees can advance an additional 7 steps (maximum Step 8) based on their previous experience. Final hourly placement on the Classified Salary schedule is dependent on the Grade Level for the position being posted and employees’ previous work experience. “Grade” refers to position or job classification and “Step” refers to the number of work experience credit or service years.
