The Special Operations Department (N252) at MITRE is currently looking for a Systems Architect with strong technical and operational skills to join our Special Operations Forces (SOF) work program. This role is crucial as the program expands its influence and adapts to meet the challenges posed by the shift from conflict to strategic competition. N252 operates as part of a globally integrated team, working closely with other MITRE Departments to support the United States Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) Headquarters, Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC), the Service Component Special Operations Commands (SOCs), and the Theatre Special Operations Commands (TSOCs). Our goal is to work with the SOF Community to minimize risk, enhance mission success, and ensure the safe return of operators.

Roles and Responsibilities:

SOF Acquisition, Technology, and Logistics (AT&L) is actively seeking innovative approaches to integrate its various components into a comprehensive, enterprise suite of capabilities. The selected candidate for this role will focus on applying systems engineering methods to 'missions' via a process known as Mission Engineering (ME). ME is a top-down, interdisciplinary approach that covers the entire technical effort to analyze, design, and integrate current and emerging operational needs and capabilities to achieve desired mission outcomes. Additionally, the selected candidate will be responsible for maintaining software solutions using modern software methodologies. This role requires expertise in continuous integration and continuous deployment processes to streamline and automate the software development lifecycle. The selected candidate will have a robust background in systems engineering, software engineering, systems architecture, and modeling and simulation.

The selected candidate will partner closely with Special Operations Department leadership, as well as the other strategic elements within MITRE, to work as a unified team leading the development of strategic technological solutions for the SOF community. Candidates must be able to work collaboratively with an integrated, federated MITRE team demonstrating strong teamwork and cooperation with Intelligence, Joint & Services, MITRE Labs, public sector, and other programs. Additionally, the selected individual will work closely with military and civilian experts from across SOF and other parts of the United States Government (USG) to address critical mission needs.

Selected candidates will demonstrate the following:

  • Domain/Technical Competence. Demonstrate strong familiarity in one or more of the following areas: (1) Systems Architecture, (2) Modeling and Simulation, (3) Digital Engineering, (4) Systems of Systems Engineering (5) Operational Planning.

  • Leadership. Closely partner with SOF program team to deliver technical solutions for SOF missions. Actively collaborate with other projects supporting related sponsors to ensure maximum value and impact across MITRE. Oversee system design and development (such as software development), systems modernization, and architecture for SOF-specific tasks.

  • Interpersonal Skills. Deliver strong leadership and partner closely with both senior military leaders and action officers to identify tactical, operational, and strategic challenges, as well as potential solutions; and communicate task goals and impacts clearly and effectively.

  • Collaboration. Develop a robust network of MITRE and other professional connections to engage and collaborate with, including engineers and planners, subject matter experts, specialists, and defense acquisition professionals. Leverage MITRE technical expertise from MITRE Labs, capabilities from the MITRE Platforms, and other efforts to provide the FFRDC differentiated value. Promote awareness and collaboration by disseminating technical products, recommendations, and activities across the MITRE enterprise.

  • Senior Engagements. Comfortably and respectfully engage with senior military leaders and engineers, as well as commercial executives.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Typically 8 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree in a technical discipline, such as Systems Engineering, Software Engineering, or related fields; or 6 years and a Master’s degree; or a PhD with 3 years’ experience; or equivalent combination of related education and work experience.

  • Applicants selected for this position will be subject to a government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or applicants who are eligible for security clearances.

  • Active Secret with the ability to obtain and maintaining a TS/SCI security clearance.

  • Experience in systems and enterprise architecture

  • Familiarity of Model Based System Engineering (MBSE) and MBSE tools

  • Strong understanding of modern system or software engineering methodologies, including Agile and Scrum

  • Familiarity with DevSecOps, continuous integration, and continuous deployment

  • Effective and influential oral communications skills

  • Strong written communications skills

  • This position requires a minimum of 4 days a week on-site.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in related field

  • Knowledge of Unmanned and/or Autonomous Systems

  • Familiarity with MITRE Project Management processes, capabilities, and associated tools

  • Demonstrated capability for strategic planning, capability gap identification, and the ability to provide actionable technological plans and solutions to government sponsors

  • Experience in Department of Defense, not-for-profit sector, or social impact organizations

  • Active TS/SCI
