The Salvation Army Health and Wellness Specialist in Suffern, New York

Overview

The Health and Wellness Specialist will work with the Health and Wellness Director to provide effective health and wellness programming to cadets at The Salvation Army College for Officer Training. Health programming will consist of education, organizing sport/fitness and recreation opportunities, and health coaching in the areas of nutrition, exercise, and healthy lifestyle habits. The Health and Wellness Specialist will also assist with the implementation of the Health and Wellness program by providing small group personal training, coordinating family-oriented recreation, and group health and wellness instruction.

Responsibilities

  • Work with the Health and Wellness Director to implement the Health and Wellness program in the College for Officer Training community.

  • Assist the Health Director with tracking required physical activity for cadets.

  • Organize and promote extracurricular fitness activities/clubs (such as hiking, bicycles, running/walking club).

  • Coordinate and supervise Sports Leagues.

  • Work with cadets on achieving health goals and adapt wellness plans for those with chronic health problems and/or restrictions supervised by the Health Director.

  • Provide health coaching in group settings, and private instruction, assisting in the areas of nutrition, exercise and other healthy habits without discussion of enhancement supplements.

  • Assist in coordinating Health and Wellness events (workshops, weight loss challenges, education).

  • Provide healthy eating educational sessions on a monthly basis or when schedule allows.

  • Coordinate and supervise annual sporting events (Watson Classic, Davidson Cup, Pepper Bowl).

  • Serve as a member on committees or teams related to health and wellness, fitness and recreational programing as needed.

  • Develop and distribute educational materials for health and fitness regularly.

  • Provide communication and promotional materials regarding programs and activities as assigned.

  • Compile statistical data on Health and Wellness programs monthly.

  • Maintain appropriate certifications as well as current continuing education as appropriate in the fields of health coaching, nutrition, and exercise physiology.

  • Maintain professional relationships including communication while continuing to build positive and trusting relationships.

  • Oversee maintenance of fitness/recreational spaces, equipment, and supplies and perform yearly inventory.

  • Perform any related additional duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Qualifications

  • CPR/AED/First Aid Certification.

  • ACSM/NASM/ACE Certification

  • Experience in managing a fitness facility is preferred.

  • Requires excellent organizational and time management skills.

  • Experience in personal training, health coaching, or related field.

  • Proficiency in developing care plans and conducting assessments.

  • Strong knowledge of nutrition, weight loss strategies, yoga, and other wellness practices.

  • Excellent communication skills and ability to motivate individuals towards positive lifestyle changes.
