Maintenance - Custodial Crew Leader    

Starting Wage:    $20.19 /hr.                                                 

                                                                                                                                     

JOB SUMMARY

This position is responsible for supervising and participating in the maintenance and custodial care and cleaning of county buildings and grounds.

MAJOR DUTIES

  • Cuts and trims lawns using walk-behind and riding mowers and weed trimmer.

  • Cleans and sanitizes common and public areas, including restrooms, lobbies, offices, and courtrooms.

  • Monitors, adjusts, and repairs underground sprinkler systems.

  • Maintains landscaping by planting and transplanting plants; identifies and removes weeds from landscape beds.

  • Identifies and treats disease affecting the health of trees and shrubs; trims trees to promote health growth.

  • Cleans exterior windows.

  • Unlocks buildings daily.

  • Tracks inventory of custodial cleaning supplies; assists in reordering those supplies.

  • Maintains and repairs small engine grounds maintenance equipment.

  • Tracks and dispense copier paper to county offices.

  • Paints interior and exterior rooms and buildings using brush, roller, and airless paint sprayer.

  • Assists with flooring maintenance, including chemical stripping and rewaxing, carpet cleaning, and carpet replacement.

  • Supervises and directs the work of the custodial crew; schedules non-daily cleaning projects as needed.

  • Assists in snow removal as needed.

  • Works outside or normal business hours on nights, weekends, or holidays as required.

  • Performs related duties.

    KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION

  • Knowledge of county safety policies and procedures.

  • Knowledge of grounds maintenance principles and practices.

  • Knowledge of horticulture and landscape maintenance principles.

  • Knowledge of custodial maintenance principles and practices.

  • Skill in the maintenance and repair of irrigation systems.

  • Skill in coordinating and supervising the work of personnel.

  • Skill in the operation and maintenance of grounds maintenance equipment.

  • Skill in oral and written communication.

  • Skill in prioritizing work.

    SUPERVISORY CONTROLS

    The Facilities Manager assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance procedures and the nature and propriety of the final results.

    GUIDELINES

    Guidelines include safety guidelines and department and county policies and procedures. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.

    COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK

  • The work consists of related supervisory and building and grounds maintenance duties. Cold and inclement weather contributes to the complexity of the position.

  • The purpose of this position is to supervise and participate in the maintenance of county facilities and grounds.  Successful performance contributes to the provision of clean and attractive facilities for county employees, citizens, and visitors.

    CONTACTS

  • Contacts are typically with coworkers, other county employees, vendors, and the general public.

  • Contacts are typically to provide services, resolve problems, give or exchange information, and motivate personnel.

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • The work is typically performed while standing, walking, bending, crouching or stooping. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, and utilizes the sense of smell.

  • The work is typically performed in county buildings. The employee is exposed to dust, dirt and irritating chemicals. The work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.

    SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY

    This position has direct supervision over Maintenance – Custodial Worker.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Knowledge and level of competency are commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education.

  • Experience sufficient to thoroughly understand the work of subordinate positions to be able to answer questions and resolve problems, usually associated with one to three years’ experience or service.

  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of South Dakota for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
