Full-time, Day Shift, 3 - 12-hour shifts, Mon 6a-6p, Tue/Wed 9a-9p

Performs diagnostic radiographic procedures adhering to the principle of radiation protection,

according to local, state and federal standards. The intent of this job description is to provide a

summary of the major duties and responsibilities of this position and shall not be considered as a

detailed description of all the work requirements that may be inherent in the position.

WORK PERFORMED

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Properly identifies patient and exam and performs diagnostic radiographic services on

patients with the maximum amount of care, while evaluating the technical quality.

  1. Responsible for successful technical continuity of care and education of radiological

procedures to patients.

  1. Demonstrates competency in the knowledge of the RIS/HIS modules appropriate to their job

responsibilities.

  1. Assists in gathering and recording data for Radiology Quality Assurance/Performance

Improvement program.

  1. Assumes responsibility for assigned area, making sure all equipment and supplies necessary

for that area are readily available for use.

  1. Accurately adheres to downtime procedures to assure appropriate information is available

resulting in excellent continuity of care for patients.

  1. Maintains responsibility for own professional development through active participation in

inservices and/or continuing education programs.

  1. Provides educational information to the patient regarding their examination.

  2. Annual peer review of films meets department standards.

  1. Knowledgeable regarding patient condition, history and appropriate background and

information pertinent to proposed examination.

  1. Accountable for quality of digital images sent to PACS. Verify correct patient is selected

from worklist, ensures accuracy of Medical Record information prior to being sent to PACS.

  1. Responsible for the success of the department to achieve hospital designated Press Ganey

mean score.

  1. Maintains confidentiality of all materials handled within the Network/Entity as well as the

proper release of information.

  1. Complies with Network and departmental policies regarding issues of employee, patient and

environmental safety and follows appropriate reporting requirements.

  1. Demonstrates/models the Network’s Service Excellence Standards of Performance in

interactions with all customers (internal and external).

  1. Demonstrates Performance Improvement in the following areas as appropriate: Clinical

Care/Outcomes, Customer/Service Improvement, Operational System/Process, and Safety.

use of resources in daily procedures, processes and practices.

  1. Complies with Network and departmental policies regarding attendance and dress code.

  2. Demonstrates competency in the assessment, range of treatment, knowledge of growth and

development and communication appropriate to the age of the patient treated.

OTHER FUNCTIONS:

  1. Assists with secretarial and file room duties when necessary, maintaining accurate patient

records. Assists in other areas as needed.

  1. Assists in lifting and transporting patients when necessary.

  2. Care for patient’s needs while in the department.

  3. Stocks and supplies inventory of Radiology Rooms.

  4. Completes Event Report Forms and/or notifies Patient Safety Hotline according to hospital

guidelines.

  1. Order entry of patient exams.

  2. Notifies RN of any patient problem or reaction.

  3. Other related duties as assigned.

PHYSICIAL AND SENSORY REQUIREMENTS:

Frequent use of fingers and hands to operate equipment, pull x-ray folders and chart information.

Walking or standing for up to 8 hours per shift in 30-minute increments. Pulling, pushing and

lifting patients up to 300 pounds with assistance. Listing and moving objects of up to 30 pounds.

Frequent stooping, crouching and bending. Frequently lifting arms above shoulder level.

Hearing as it relates to normal conversation. Seeing as it relates to normal vision.

POTENTIAL ON-THE-JOB RISKS:

  1. Normal patient care environment with little exposure to excessive noise, dust and

temperature.

  1. Continuous exposure to infection and/or contagious diseases when working with patients

(risk minimized by adherence to universal precautions).

  1. Potential risk for back injury due to lifting (risk minimized using body mechanics techniques

according to the guidelines and inservices established by the Hospital Safety Officer).

  1. Frequent exposure to ionizing radiation (risk minimized by adherence to State mandate

radiation safety protection codes).

  1. Minimal exposure to hazardous chemicals (risk minimized by adherence to Right-to-Know

Laws).

  1. Frequent exposure to electrical equipment (risk minimized by adherence to electrical safety

procedures).

  1. Frequent exposure to latex products.

  2. Exposure to needle sticks (risk minimized by following hospital safety guidelines).

  3. Employees who work in patient care areas where they may have potential exposure to patients

with suspected or proven tuberculosis (TB) must have the ability to wear a particulate

respirator and be fit-tested in compliance with the current recommendations from the CDC

(enforced by OSHA) or must provide physician documentation as to the inability to wear a

particulate respirator.

SPECIFIC PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT AVAILABLE: Impervious gowns, gloves, shoe

covers, mask, cap, Needleless system, Patient transfer board, lead apron, thyroid shield, lead

glasses, goggles, film badges.

MOST COMPLEX DUTY: Performing diagnostic radiographs on patients in a trauma

situation.

SUPERVISION (RECEIVED BY AND/OR GIVEN TO): Supervised by technical

supervisor. Supervises Radiology students rotating through Diagnostic Radiology.

COMMUNICATIONS: Must be able to communicate effectively with department staff,

hospital staff, radiologists, physicians, patients and family members.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS: Exhibits tact and concern in dealing with patients and

peers. Must possess excellent interpersonal skills and good judgment. Must be able to have

good follow through with problem solving.

QUALIFICATIONS)

(MINIMUM)

EDUCATION: Graduate from an ARRT recognized education program, or ARRT registered, or

ARRT registry eligible. Must pass registry within 1 year of hire date. NJ staff must be

registered before date of hire.

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE: Experience as a radiologic technologist preferred, and

ongoing training in department procedures. Must rotate through all areas of diagnostic

radiology. Current CPR certification required before completion of orientation. History of

computer usage experience required.

WORK SCHEDULE: Day shift with middle shift, night shift, weekends and holidays as

required based on the needs of the department. On-call rotation for operating room coverage.
