Social Science Research Coordinator

Department Description: The Department of Linguistics at Stanford University, housed in the School of Humanities and Sciences, is at the forefront of research and education in the study of language. The department has a thriving undergraduate major and a top-ranked PhD program, with labs conducting research on phonetics and phonology, syntax, semantics and pragmatics, psycholinguistics, and sociolinguistics. The Social Interaction and Language (SoIL) Lab has recently joined this vibrant research community, focusing on the cognitive mechanisms that enable individuals to use language for flexible communication, collaboration, and coordination in everyday social interactions. Our research draws on a multidisciplinary approach combining methods cognitive science and computer science to approach a wide range of topics, including language acquisition and the development of conversational skills in children, computational models of pragmatics and dialogue, and cross-cultural aspects of language use.

Position Summary: The Social Interaction + Language (SoIL) lab in the Department of Linguistics is seeking a Research Coordinator. The Research Coordinator will work under general supervision of Assistant Professor Robert Hawkins on a wide variety of multi-disciplinary projects being carried out in the lab, including (1) assisting in establishing and maintaining the lab's experimental and data analysis pipelines, (2) writing, submitting, and updating research protocols with the Institutional Review Board (IRB), (3) updating and maintaining the lab website, ensuring current information on research projects, publications, and lab members, (4) overseeing participant recruitment processes, ensuring diverse and representative samples, (5) coordinating and conducting experimental sessions, including those involving families and children, (5) organizing and maintaining lab databases and data storage systems using best practices, including version control and open science principles, (6) assisting in pre-processing and analyzing complex, multivariate datasets (e.g., neuroimaging data, large-scale text corpora, or naturalistic video data), (6) developing and maintaining scripts for data collection, processing, and analysis using relevant programming languages (e.g., Python, R, JavaScript) (7) training and supervising undergraduate research assistants and coordinating the onboarding of new lab members and visitors.

Core Duties:

· Prepare correspondence, documents and reports.

· Maintain and file forms and documents, including consent forms and master subject logs.

· Assist with the screening, recruiting, and obtaining consent of study participants. Perform telephone or in-person interviews to gather data, as needed. Schedule and/or call subjects for appointments.

· Prepare, distribute, administer and process questionnaires and tests, score test measurements and questionnaires, and code data for computer entry. Perform quantitative review of forms, tests, and other measurements for completeness and accuracy.

· Prepare data for input into statistical databases by typing, editing, and organizing data.

· Apply formulas and calculations to research data using basic statistical programs. Review and verify accuracy of database information and assist in making necessary corrections according to specific guidelines.

· Order and maintain equipment and supplies.

Education and Experience:

• Two-year college degree and one year of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of experience, education, and training.

• Preferred: Four-year college degree and one year of relevant experience in as a lab manager in a psycholinguistics lab.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

· General understanding of scientific theory and methods.

· General computer skills and ability to quickly learn and master computer programs.

· Ability to work under deadlines with general guidance.

· Excellent organizational skills and demonstrated ability to complete detailed work accurately.

· Effective oral and written communication skills.

· Ability to work with human study participants.

In addition, preferred skills include:

· Strong understanding of experimental design and research methods in cognitive science, psychology, or linguistics

· Familiarity with quantitative and qualitative data analysis techniques

· Knowledge of ethical considerations in human subjects research

· Proficiency in at least one programming language (e.g., Python, R, JavaScript)

· Experience in solving technical challenges using existing libraries and computational frameworks

· Ability to process, visualize, and analyze datasets

· Familiarity with advanced statistics (i.e. mixed-effects models, Bayesian models)

· Ability to work under deadlines with general guidance.

· Ability to communicate complex scientific concepts to diverse audiences

· Proficiency in academic writing and presentation

· Excellent organizational skills and demonstrated ability to complete detailed work accurately.

· Strong ability to work and communicate effectively with individuals from different cultures and backgrounds

Working Conditions:

· May be exposed to blood borne pathogens.

· May be required to work non-standard, extended or weekend hours in support of research work.

The expected pay range for this position is $24.04 to $34.13 per hour.
