DESCRIPTION/RESPONSIBILITIES: Product Development Chemist

As a Product Development Chemist in the dynamic Science & Technology team at PPG, you will be at the forefront of pioneering research and development.

Your role is crucial in driving organic growth through product creation, while also ensuring the enhancement and support of our existing portfolio. You will help identify and develop next-generation products and explore new market opportunities, all while focusing on cost-effective solutions.

In this role, your expertise will guide the technical aspects of multiple projects in the paint & stain sectors. You will help safeguard our intellectual property, a vital component of our strategic growth. Collaboration is important, and you will work with teams across product management, marketing, sales, technical services, manufacturing, quality assurance, legal, environmental health and safety (EHS), product stewardship, and procurement departments. You will work on-site at our Cheswick, PA facility just outside of Pittsburgh, and report to the S&T Product Development Supervisor .

Responsibilities: * Create a culture where safety comes first and ensure compliance with PPG environmental, health, and safety policies. * Drive projects against set milestones and deliver results. * Coordinate related activities including formulation, processing, testing and application. * Design, execute, and analyze experiments to develop paints & stains. * Apply statistical tools (Six Sigma), design of experiment, and structure-property-relationship principles daily to research duties. * Document experiments and conclusions in a clear, concise, and searchable manner. * Complete work at the bench to promote best practices to the broader PPG Architectural team. * Work closely with product management, manufacturing and procurement organizations, to develop new products and maintain existing product lines through formulation and product optimization. * Maintain an environment dedicated to scientific excellence where hypothesis-driven research and statistical rigor are applied to understand and solve problems. * Ensure alignment to standard methodologies for product development and formulation practice creation. * Support product management and manufacturing to complete tasks within larger projects. * Support a culture that values diversity, equity, and inclusion so that every employee can bring their full self to work each day.

Qualifications: * Bachelor's degree or greater in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering, Engineering, Polymer Science, or a relevant technical field with a minimum of three (3) years of experience working in a lab setting required. * Previous experience in architectural, waterborne coatings, or other coatings technology and/or coatings manufacturing is preferred.
