Salary: £13.63 per hour

 

The University of Sheffield International College is seeking Classroom Assistants for our Foundation Level Mathematics module.  

The post holder will be part of the College’s Mathematics Team.  

 

ABOUT THE ROLE 

The main responsibilities of the post are to:

  • Support individual and small group learning under the supervision of the classroom tutor.

  • Guide students to improve their understanding by: 

o    confirming that they understand what is required of them.

o    encouraging reference to notes and textbooks.

o    helping students to identify areas of misunderstanding.

o    eliciting the next step in a calculation or explanation.

o    encouraging students to explain the process by which they have arrived at an answer.

  • Maintain, on behalf of the tutor, a record of homework completion and other such admin tasks.

  • Feedback to the tutor features of the students’ learning.

  • Help student to maintain a focus on their learning in English.

  • Undertake marking of formative class tests and the checking of summary marks under supervision.

The Classroom Assistant will be assisting in the teaching of IFY Mathematics, a Level 3 module delivered to groups of international students in classrooms. 

The successful candidate will be competent in the use of IT skills related to teaching, including the use of VLEs.

ABOUT YOU

  • English language competence of IELTS 6.5 or equivalent or above.

  • Subject competence indicated by GCE ‘A’ Level in the relevant subject area at grade B or above or a grade of 65% or above on the relevant USIC module.

  • Completion of year 1 or above of a cognate undergraduate degree.

  • Ability to work independently and using their own initiative while under supervision.
