Purpose of the Role

The Process Development Specialist, APAC, will lead projects in the region from raw materials to final product, driving product and process quality, efficiency, and innovation at the Shanghai R&D Centre, regarded as the Diageo centre of excellence for APAC.

Reporting Line : APAC Laboratories Manager, Science & Technology, Global Technical.

Location : Research & Development Centre, Shanghai, China (includes travel to other locations as needed)

Scope : APAC (linked to Global)

This role sits within APAC Technical team, part of the Global Technical: Science & Technology function. The team brings together a wide range of complementary expertise and skills, leaning towards mixed alcohol beverages and distilled spirits.

Process Development Specialist – APAC will:

  • Add value to the business and build the reputation of the S&T team as a trusted technical partner to unlock future technical challenges for APAC region.

  • Leverage Science and Technology’s network to identify and assess future opportunities in Raw Materials, Product Quality, and Process Science & Technology (including malting, fermentation, distillation, and maturation chemistry) to deliver innovative product and process science and technology for APAC region, across categories, product types and production sites

The scope of the role is ‘end to end’ process including -

  • Business Support: Analysis, problem-solving and driving improvement opportunities for quality, compliance, product and process efficiencies, and innovation across the Diageo portfolio, globally.

  • Strategic Projects: Delivery of strategic projects benefitting Diago’s business model, material/product/process quality, compliance, productivity, innovation, and sustainability agendas.

Research & Development: Horizon scanning and pipeline development to ensure cutting-edge technology being developed and deployed at Diageo.

Key Accountabilities

· Manage and run the distilling initiatives, providing direction and support to best enable delivery of business benefit in adherence with Diageo health and safety policies.

· Key member of the S&T team helping to define and deliver business benefit.

· Role will vary from Project Management to Workstream Leadership to Support or consult role depending on the scale and nature of the project.

· Remain externally curious, curate and develop technical, operations, brand and innovation team relationships to deliver maximum ROI through internal and external networks.

· Liaise with suppliers and external agencies to design, plan, and co-ordinate trials externally or in our production sites to evaluate processes, technologies, process aids and ingredients.

Entry level requirements – skills and experience

  • Degree in distillation, Brewing, Food Science / Engineering.

  • A strong background in, operations and competency in end-to-end Distillation process and one or more of the following: Liquid manufacturing / processing, Biotechnology, Fermentation, Microbiology, Filtration, CIP, Water Treatment, Project management, Innovation and Sustainability.

  • 5 years practical/production experience in a relevant Technical role, management experience preferred.

  • Ability to work with uncertainty and drive innovation.

  • Ability to work within a team and excellent stakeholder engagement.

  • Breadth and depth of knowledge of liquid / manufacturing processes desirable.

  • Clear thinker and communicator with good analytical and planning skills
