City of Savannah Sanitation Education Coordinator in Savannah, Georgia

Purpose

This position is responsible for implementing and maintaining outreach and educational activities to promote litter prevention, waste reduction, recycling, and neighborhood beautification. This position also serves as the Executive Director for the Keep Savannah Beautiful program.

Essential Job Functions
  • Develops and coordinates distribution of instructional and promotional material and news releases for all solid waste programs; creates logos, images, and signage; manages, designs, produces, and edits publications for several programs and services; assists with the preparation of the monthly Sanitation Bureau newsletter, budget proposals, and grant proposals.
  • Plans, directs, and coordinates program goals and objectives with state and local; conducts workshops and presentations for community groups; works with local non-profit organizations to coordinate special events; attends neighborhood meetings.
  • Serves as media relations liaison for waste reduction activities and coordinates photo opportunities and feature stories; creates advertising for print media and Public Service Announcements for radio; develops clipping file to monitor media coverage; serves as community resource person in areas of environmental education, waste reduction, recycling, and solid waste.
  • Works with neighborhood associations to achieve neighborhood goals; provides ongoing technical assistance to neighborhood groups; organizes and helps with neighborhood clean-ups.
  • Performs a variety of research and information-gathering assignments; identifies resources and addresses problems; identifies, analyzes, and reports problems; conducts surveys; researches, analyzes, and compiles information; compiles and prepares reports on neighborhood trends, issues, and strategies.
  • Performs monthly ride-through of neighborhoods; generates reports of conditions and forwards to responsible city departments.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree in Sociology, Public Administration, Education, Social or Behavioral Science, Public Relations, Environmental Science, Business Administration or Business Management; with four (4) years of community organizing/improvement strategies, customer service, and project coordination, community field experience must be in a work environment - volunteer experience does not apply for Community Services work; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Must possess and maintain a valid state driver's license with an acceptable driving history.

Additional Requirements Background investigation, including supervised drug screen, post offer/pre-employment medical screen; andverification of education, certifications, and licenses required prior to employment.

Minimum Standards

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS: The Commercial and Recycling/Litter Abatement Director assigns work in terms of very general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures and the effectiveness of the final results.

GUIDELINES: Guidelines include city and department policies and p ocedures, grant regulations, and program requirements. These guidelines require judgment, selection, and interpretation in application.

COMPLEXITY: The work consists of varied administrative duties. The need to coordinate activities with multiple groups and individuals contributes to the complexity of the position.

SCOPE AND EFFECT: The purpose of this position is to coordinate outreach and educational programs. Successful performance in this position results in an improved quality of life for area residents.

PERSONAL CONTACTS: Contacts are typically with co-workers, members of the general public, and members of community organizations and churches.

PURPOSE OF CONTACTS: Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, provide services, and resolve problems.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or table or while intermittently sitting, standing, or stooping. The employee occasionally lifts light or heavy objects.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work is typically performed in an office or outdoors.
