Sarasota County Government Skilled Trades Worker II - Solid Waste in Sarasota, Florida

Do you have a passion for working with your hands and repairing things? We have an opening for a Skilled Trades Worker II in our Solid Waste Department. In this role, you will be working on improvements, repairs, and maintenance using various light and heavy types of equipment at our Solid Waste Department Facilities. The pay starts out at $21.07 (Step 1), may be higher based on experience, benefits begin within 60 days of hire, and there are numerous opportunities for career growth.   • Heavy equipment includes a farm tractor, dump truck, a truck with trailer, loader, dozer, excavator, backhoe, and skid steer.

  • Light equipment includes various air or gas-operated hand tools such as lawnmowers, chain saws, electrical saws, drills, and mechanical hand tools.

  • Responsible for managing the exterior property by mowing, trimming, land clearing, erosion repair, fencing, landfill infrastructure maintenance, spraying vegetation, culverts, and pipes.

  • Responsible for managing the interior property by basic maintenance and working with plumbing.

  • Performing preventative equipment repair to hydraulic, mechanical, and small engines.

  • Test electrical components for failures and make repairs.

  • Perform welding, fabrication, drilling, grinding, use of oxygen/acetylene torch, and plasma cutting.

  • Perform painting and carpentry such as drywall repair, ceiling tile replacement, door and window adjustments, weather caulking, and hurricane protection.

  • Stormwater Systems - conducts inspection and makes repairs to stormwater system infrastructure at landfill facilities.

  • Record work performed in an automated work system, reviewing plans, drawings, and schematics.

Work Hours: Monday – Friday, 7:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.

About You

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or its equivalent.

  • Three (3) years of experience in the operation of heavy and light equipment.

  • Valid Florida Driver’s License at the time of hire.

  • Must be able to acquire a Class "A" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with air brake endorsements within six (6) months from the date of hire.

Physical Demands: Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

Subject to Passing Substance Screening: This position is subject to passing a pre-employment substance screening. An applicant who fails to pass a required drug screening test shall be disqualified from employment in any class for a period of five (5) years

Starting Pay Range: $21.07 (Step 1), may be higher based on experience

Position Pay Range: $21.07 (Step 1) - $30.92 (Step 14)
