The San Francisco Digital Services Team is transforming how residents interact with the City, by building services designed around the people that use them.

The team improves the public’s experience with the city by delivering high-quality, accessible experiences for the website, in-person experiences and for the city employees supporting these services.

About the role

This position is hybrid in-person/remote, requiring 1 day a week in the office.

The SFDDS Product Director has an unparalleled opportunity to shape the City’s digital products and services, from the high-level product roadmap to citywide metrics and product standards and will be responsible for the following: 

  • Provide clear product vision and strategy across all of our products, and set a high ambition for our work

  • Lead and manage the Digital Services Product team of 4 PMs ranging from mid-level to very senior: support them in leading multi-disciplinary agile product teams and shipping great work, help them standardize their approach and tools, and share their work among the team and in the wider city

  • Alongside the CDSO and Delivery Director, form strong relationships with our peers and partners in departments: help departments frame problems to solve, support research efforts citywide, develop thoughtful metrics, and strategically sequence efforts across products

  • Collaborate closely with senior peers (Engineering Director, Delivery Director, Chief Data Officer, and heads of Design and Content) to align strategy and practice across the Digital and Data Services team

  • Be adept at managing vendor relationships where needed, and at the same time, be committed to Digital Services owning our own products and using open source technology where possible and practical

  • Elevate inclusion and accessibility from all angles – disability, language, culture, and income level

  • Be deeply attuned to resident and partner needs, and value the input of designers, researchers, analysts, and policy teams

  • Represent Digital and Data Services to staff at all levels in the City, and provide expert input where it is needed in other departments

  • Champion and teach the practice of product management throughout the City

  • Contribute as a leader to the culture of the SFDDS team overall, making sure communication is constructive, honest and open, and leading by example

Minimum qualifications

A baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution (up to 2 years of additional experience above minimum may be substituted in its absence)

5 years of professional experience in Product Management of which 3 years must include supervising professionals.

Desired Qualifications

  • Past shipping responsibility as a senior product manager or DRI

  • Experience managing products in regulated industries or government

  • Experience as a Group Product Manager or managing Product Management teams

  • Experience teaching Product Management or mentoring PMs

  • Experience with any of our major service domains: affordable housing, city planning, business permitting, public health, emergency services, grantmaking, etc

  • Public sector experience of any kind as a professional or volunteer

  • Experience managing open-source CMS products

  • Past excellent relationships with cross-disciplinary peers

  • Experience presenting and negotiating at executive level

  • Strong communicator orally and in writing - persuasive, authentic, and clear

  • Bilingual experience is always valuable to our team

  • Self awareness and humility

Salary Range: $77.70- $99.1375(hourly) / $161,616 - $206,206 (annually)
