BMO Financial Group Manager, Sustainability and Climate Disclosure & Impact in San Francisco, California

MANDATE

This role is enterprise-wide in scope and reports to the Director, Sustainability Strategy, Disclosure & Impact, and the Senior Advisor, Sustainability Strategy, Disclosure & Impact. The Manager supports the Sustainability team in identifying key sustainability issues and advancing management programs relating to BMO’s Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) and Sustainability performance. The Manager supports the enterprise sustainability and climate strategy, impact measurement, and management reporting/disclosure.

The holder of the role has subject matter expertise and draws on knowledge and experience in sustainability and climate change. The role requires someone with strong problem solving, research and analysis, written and verbal communication and project management skills.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

GHG quantification

  • Monitor developments and provide subject-matter expertise on GHG accounting and target-setting principles and methodologies including those of the GHG Protocol, ISO 14064-1, Partnership for Carbon Accounting Financials (PCAF), Net Zero Banking Alliance (NZBA), Science-based Targets Initiative (SBTi), others.

  • Lead quantification of BMO’s operational greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions accounting in accordance with the GHG Protocol, including Scope 1, Scope 2 and operational Scope 3 categories.

  • Work with Corporate Real Estate team to collect, track and report BMO’s operational efficiency metrics including energy consumption, GHG emissions, waste management, and water consumption.

  • Implement, maintain and optimize GHG quantification software.

  • Lead third-party assurance processes related to Scope 1, Scope 2 and Scope 3 emissions including financed and facilitated emissions.

  • Support and advise on target-setting approaches for operational, financed and facilitated emissions in accordance with related initiatives (e.g. SBTi, Net Zero Banking Alliance (NZBA), others) based on an understanding of sectoral decarbonization pathways.

  • Support the team in developing and implementing strategy related to operational greenhouse gas (GHG) reductions / decarbonization and carbon neutrality.

Disclosure

  • Support, as part of a broader team:

  • Development of the content of BMO’s Climate Report in accordance with voluntary and regulatory frameworks (e.g. TCFD, PCAF, NZBA, OSFI B-15, OSFI Risk Return, ISSB/CSSB, CSRD).

  • Development of enterprise-wide Climate Transition Plan and related strategic initiatives in accordance with regulatory requirements (e.g. OSFI B-15) and global guidance (e.g. GFANZ).

Impact Measurement

  • Monitor emerging sustainability and climate-related metrics and make recommendations related to adoption, methodology and calculation approaches.

  • Support and advise on the development and evolution of BMO’s Sustainable and Climate Finance Directive and methodology to support the bank’s credible growth of sustainable finance

  • Develop and implement impact measurement approaches for sustainable and climate finance

Other

  • Implement robust data governance procedures and controls to produce reliable, accurate, complete and transparent reporting that is auditable.

  • Support the enterprise climate and sustainability data and analytics program in relation to financed emissions quantification and sustainable and climate finance identification and tracking.

  • Support preparation of presentations and messaging for senior management and executives on sustainability and climate-related topics, as needed.

  • Assistance in developing and executing other sustainability related programs as may be needed.

  • Actively participate in and represent BMO in industry association working groups as such as those of the UNEP FI, Canadian Bankers Association, PCAF, NZBA, others.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

  • Degree in a related field such as sustainability, climate, business, finance, engineering, accounting. Masters-level preferred.

  • 5 - 7 years’ experience in a financial institution, the commercial real estate sector and/or a sustainability-related field is an asset.

  • Advanced knowledge and proven application of operational GHG accounting and reporting based on the GHG Protocol and the ISO 14064-1 standard: Specification with guidance at the organization level for quantification and reporting of greenhouse gas emissions and removals.

  • Advanced knowledge and proven application of the PCAF Global GHG Standards for financed emissions quantification and an understanding of facilitated emissions methodologies.

  • Understanding of SBTi’s criteria on operational GHG reduction target setting.

  • Understanding of the Net Zero Banking Alliance (NZBA) commitment requirements and target-setting guidance.

  • Strong ability to translate quantitative analysis in to findings, conclusions and recommendations.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

  • Strong relationship management skills and well-developed negotiation skills

  • Strong critical thinking, problem solving skills and ability to navigate ambiguous situations.

  • Self-starter and motivated

  • Ability to work independently with little oversight

  • Strong project management skills and ability to handle multiple tasks, change priorities and operate effectively in a fast paced environment

  • Results oriented and goal driven

  • Politically astute, diplomatic and able to navigate complex corporate and external environment with numerous stakeholders on highly sensitive and controversial topics

  • Strong change management skills

Compensation and Benefits:

$79,800.00 - $148,000.00

Salaried

The above represents BMO Financial Group’s pay range and type.

Salaries will vary based on factors such as location, skills, experience, education, and qualifications for the role, and may include a commission structure. Salaries for part-time roles will be pro-rated based on number of hours regularly worked. For commission roles, the salary listed above represents BMO Financial Group’s expected target for the first year in this position.

BMO Financial Group’s total compensation package will vary based on the pay type of the position and may include performance-based incentives, discretionary bonuses, as well as other perks and rewards.
