The Mission of the San Francisco Department of Public Health (SFDPH) is to protect and promote the health of all San Franciscans. SFDPH strives to achieve its mission through the work of two main Divisions - the San Francisco Health Network and Population Health. The San Francisco Health Network is the City’s only complete system of care and has locations throughout the City, including Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center, Laguna Honda Hospital and Rehabilitation Center, and over 15 primary care health centers.

The Director of Dental Services (0941 Manager VI) oversees the delivery of oral healthcare services within the San Francisco Health Network (SFHN) Primary Care health centers; collaborates with the SFHN Primary Care Leadership Team, Maternal, Child, and Adolescent Health (MCAH), and with managers of each of the health centers providing dental services; functions as the San Francisco Department of Public Health’s (SFDPH) liaison, with other City departments and offices which offer oral health services, including the San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD), the San Francisco Community Clinic Consortium (SFCCC), and Project Homeless Connect; promotes and coordinates oral health activities that enhance the public health, including collaboration with local dental schools to promote teaching and research in the areas of dentistry and oral health. The Director of Dental Services (0941 Manager VI) has primary responsibility for planning and directing all clinic based SFDPH dental activities, as well as coordinating dental services across the city.

The Director of Dental Services (0941 Manager VI) will perform the following essential functions:

  • Plans, directs, and oversees the activities and resources of SFHN Dental Services.

  • Ensures that evaluation and treatment of clinical services provided to dental patients are in compliance with applicable laws and contracts.

  • Supervises the work of the SFHN Dental Services staff; including Dentists, Dental Hygienists, Dental Aides, and administrative team.

  • Represents SFHN Dental Services on all appropriate committees, community organizations, agencies, governing bodies, and regulatory systems.

  • Oversees all aspects of the Epic Electronic Health Record as it relates to SFHN Dental Services, including developing workflows, ensuring staff training and proper use of the new system.

  • Participates in direct patient care/clinical activities as part of Dental Services.

The Director of Dental Services (0941 Manager VI) performs other duties as required and assigned.

Required Minimum Qualifications (all applicants must verify that they meet both elements below):

  • LICENSE: Possession of a valid license to practice dentistry issued by the Dental Board of California (SEE CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT); AND

  • EXPERIENCE: Four (4) years of managerial experience in a health care entity of which all must include supervising professionals; AND One (1) year of dentistry practice experience.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

Applicants possessing a valid license to practice dentistry from another state within the United States of America may participate in this examination process and if successful, be placed on the resulting eligible list/score report, but the selected candidate will NOT be appointed/hired until they obtain a valid license to practice dentistry issued by the Dental Board of California.

Note: One year of full-time employment is equivalent to 2,000 hours of qualifying work experience (one year if performed full-time at 40 hours per week).

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS: The stated desirable qualifications may be considered at the end of the selection process when candidates are referred for hiring.

  • One (1) year of experience with an electronic health record systems/practice management software program.

  • Experience using principles, practices, and techniques of program planning, development and evaluation as applied to a health care setting in a multicultural environment.

  • Knowledge of principles, practices, and techniques to ensure compliance with State and Federal regulations.

     

Selection Procedures:

Training and Experience Evaluation (T&E) (Weight: 100%)

Candidates will be invited to respond to a Training and Experience Evaluation (T&E) designed to measure management competencies as well as job-related areas that have been identified as critical for the Director of Dental Services in class 0941 Manager. The T&E link will be emailed to the email address listed on the candidate’s online application. Candidates will be required to respond to the T&E by the deadline indicated and must submit the completed evaluation as directed in order to have it evaluated. Responses cannot be changed once submitted. Candidates will be evaluated based on their T&E responses. 

Candidates must achieve a passing score on the training and evaluation evaluation in order to continue in the selection process and will be placed on the confidential eligible list in rank order according to their final score.

Certification

The certification rule for the eligible list resulting from this examination will be the Rule of the List.
