The Fastly Law team is seeking an exceptionally talented, energetic, and driven privacy attorney. We are looking for a lawyer who sees themself as a trusted advisor who solves problems practically. The ideal candidates for this position value working on a strong and diverse team, and want to contribute to creating a welcoming, inclusive and supportive environment. This role will primarily focus on driving and executing on key privacy initiatives at Fastly, but will also encompass some product counseling. Overall, this opportunity is an ideal fit for a candidate with a foundation in privacy work who is looking to grow their experience in product and IP counseling for a leading edge compute platform. This position is open to candidates based in San Francisco or New York and reports to the Managing Legal Director of Product, Privacy, and Intellectual Property.

What You'll Do:

  • Execute key data protection, privacy, and compliance initiatives

  • Develop programs and processes for privacy and data protection compliance

  • Support our product and engineering teams with privacy-focused guidance such as incorporating “privacy by design”

  • Collaborate with the commercial legal team on the negotiation of DPAs, security addendums, and other agreements with customers and vendors

  • Work closely with our compliance and data governance teams to carry out audits and update records and documentation

  • Monitor privacy developments and data protection laws impacting Fastly and our customers and advise on emerging risks and opportunities for the business

  • Work on other projects as needed

What We're Looking For:

  • JD degree with strong academic credentials and admitted to practice law in at least one U.S. jurisdiction

  • 4+ years of relevant legal experience counseling global companies on international privacy and data protection issues, preferably with time in-house at a technology company

  • Advanced knowledge of global privacy and data protection laws, regulations and compliance regimes at all levels, including familiarity with regimes including GDPR and CCPA

  • Experience counseling product teams on “privacy by design” and working with product teams on data privacy and data protection controls

  • Solution-oriented business and legal approach with growth and adaptable mindsets

  • Strong communication skills and cooperative team player

  • Empathy, understanding, and embrace of diverse points of view.

  • Flexibility to adapt and thrive in a fast-paced environment

  • Demonstrated ability and strong desire to develop relationships, and work collaboratively with stakeholders across teams to solve problems efficiently and amenably

  • Experience prioritizing work and providing advice under deadlines

  • Ability to draft documents, policies, messages and other communications in a precise manner that is digestible for non-lawyers

We’ll be super impressed if you have experience in any of these:

  • CIPP certification(s)

  • Experience with product counseling

  • Curiosity about how the internet really works and enthusiasm for technology

Work Hours:

  • This position will require you to be available during core business hours.

Fastly currently embraces a largely hybrid model for most roles which allows employees flexibility to split their time between the office and home.

This position may require travel as required by your role or requested by your manager.

Salary:

The estimated salary range for this position is $181,220 to $226,520.

Starting salary may vary based on permissible, non-discriminatory factors such as experience, skills, qualifications, and location.

This role may be eligible to participate in Fastly’s equity and discretionary bonus programs.
