Job Summary

The Volunteer Program Assistant supports the Volunteer Coordinator and the Community Programs Manager in the daily management of NHMU’s Volunteer Program by: assisting with the recruitment and onboarding of volunteers; helping to maintain the volunteer database; supporting volunteer training and evaluation; assisting with volunteer recognition; preparing reports as needed; corresponding with volunteers as needed. They must communicate clearly, have excellent attention to detail, and enjoy working with people. Review of applications will begin on Monday, July 1, 2024 and continue until the position is filled.

Responsibilities

The Volunteer Program Assistant will:

  • work closely with the Volunteer Coordinator and Community Programs Manager to understand upcoming programs and events.

  • assist in overseeing daily program operations, including clerical work and calendar management.

  • work closely with the Volunteer Coordinator to assist in the recruitment and onboarding process for volunteers, including application screening and interviews.

  • provide support in the planning and facilitation of volunteer activities, including continuing education programs and recognition and social events.

  • assist in managing the volunteer database and confidential personnel files.

  • communicate with volunteers and staff as needed.

  • act professionally when working with a diverse range of volunteers, potential volunteers, community members, and staff.

  • opportunities to assist in facilitating STEM -based outreach programming may be available.

  • other duties as assigned.

  • must possess a valid driver’s license; ability to travel and occasionally remain overnight. This job description is not designed to contain or be interpreted as a comprehensive inventory of all duties, responsibilities, and qualifications required of employees assigned to the job.

Minimum Qualifications

Associate’s degree in a related field or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience) required. Two years of related experience, ability to use logic and reasoning to prioritize tasks, expertise using MS Office software, and demonstrated human relation and effective communication skills also required. Database experience preferred. Bachelor’s degree in a related field may be preferred.

Preferences

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.

  • Experience working with culturally diverse populations preferred.

  • Computer skills, including spreadsheet software and/or database software preferred.

  • Ability to speak conversational Spanish preferred.

  • Broad knowledge of natural history topics preferred.
