UTAH'S HOGLE ZOO Grounds Keeper - Irrigation Technician in SALT LAKE CITY, Utah

POSITION SUMMARY 

This position performs a variety of duties required to maintain the appearance and cleanliness of Utah's Hogle Zoo. The primary focus is maintaining the irrigation systems of the zoo: timers, valves, heads, pipe, wiring, and troubleshooting. The position also includes performing general horticulture and grounds tasks. Examples are: mowing, weeding planting beds, turf, and tree/shrub maintenance, picking up trash, raking leaves, clearing pathways and removing debris.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

  1. Maintain irrigation timers, valves, pipes, heads.
  2. Proactively repair irrigation pipe, fittings, heads, valves, controllers, wiring.
  3. Perform general and seasonal system maintenance including start-ups, audits, and winterization.
  4. Test irrigation systems for proper functioning of valves and timers; Record and report detailed inspections.
  5. Read diagrams and blueprints to layout and locate irrigation pipes, heads, valves, timers and wiring.
  6. Locate, excavate and repair or replace damaged or malfunctioning lines and controls
  7. Responsible for keeping adequate parts inventory.
  8. Think critically to solve problems and complete repairs with minimal impact to lawn or landscape.
  9. Monitor water efficiency and make adjustments to quickly correct over or under watering.
  10. Perform typical grounds and horticulture tasks with the team.
  11. Support Zoo events by moving and locating needed table chairs and picnic tables for scheduled event set up. 
  12. Commitment to the zoo's mission and conservation efforts. 
  13. Ability to work overtime as needed.  
  14. Performs other duties as assigned. 
  15. Maintains strict confidentiality.  

     

QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

 

Education 

High School Diploma or GED equivalent.  CIT or equivalent certification preferred.

3 years professional experience working in Grounds maintenance with experience in irrigation system installation, maintenance, repair and controls.

 

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Able to work variable shifts with weekends and holidays required. 
  • Experience in software applications with the ability to receive task and track time in a work order system.  
  • Microsoft Office Suite. 
  • Performs basic mathematical formulas and calculations.

Required Grounds skills: 

  • Ability to operate small hand tools and small gasoline operated equipment in all weather conditions.  
  • Ability to perform manual labor both indoors and outdoors for an extended period of time, including during inclement weather.  
  • Operate various types of handheld a nd light mechanical equipment including mowers, sweepers, blowers, and other maintenance equipment.

Work Environment

Tasks requir a variety of moderately heavy physical activities which generally involve muscular strain. Requires activities related to walking, standing, bending, stooping, sitting, reaching, talking, hearing and seeing. Common eye, hand, finger dexterity required to perform essential functions.Exposure to spraying of insecticides and herbicides, spreading of fertilizers, cleaning and sanitation chemicals heat, cold, noise, dust and fumes. Requires lifting of up to 50 lbs.
