State of Utah - Jobs Bookstore Manager in SALT LAKE CITY, Utah

  Job Title: Bookstore Manager Job Description: The Utah Geological Survey,a division of the Department of Natural Resources,is looking for an outdoor enthusiast to manage the Natural Resources Map & Bookstore. We are an information outlet and small store selling topographic,recreational,and geologic maps as well as books on Utah history and all aspects of Utah s majestic natural places. We need someone with retail and/or hospitality experience who understands maps and has knowledge of Utah s outdoor activities such as hiking,biking,hunting,fishing,watercraft,and OHV trail riding. Principle Duties:

  • Manage store operations
  • Work with a team to develop a business plan for growth,development,and future direction of the store
  • Assist a wide assortment of customers with questions on topics such as hunting,fishing,state parks and public lands,trails,map use,rockhounding,etc.
  • Process transactions at the cash register,give correct change,and perform end of day accounting procedures for the cash register
  • Assist customers in locating products
  • Conduct regular merchandise inventory,as well as supplies and equipment management by making any necessary purchase orders with vendors or suppliers
  • Process and ship online customer orders
  • Print maps on demand using our large format printing plotter
  • Arrange and stock products on shelves so that the store is organized and efficient for customers and staff

The Ideal Candidate (will have):

  • Robust geographic knowledge of Utah
  • Ability to read and use topographic maps
  • Ability to find locations using township and range,UTM,or GPS coordinates
  • Customer service: interacting with customers and assisting them in their purchasing process,creating a welcoming atmosphere in the store,proactively helping customers to find what they are looking for and making an effort to improve customer relationships
  • Computer literacy: adept with Microsoft Office or Google Workspace and familiar with printing to large format printers
  • Online sales skills: familiarity with the Shopify platform preferred
  • Time management: managing several job duties while providing timely service to customers. May need to handle multiple customers during periods with a high level of in-store traffic
  • Communication skills: good verbal communication skills are essential for this job
  • Accounting skills: performing basic accounting functions and using accounting software
  • Can interact effectively with a wide variety of patrons

Health Insurance - Public Employee Health Program (PEHP):

  • 3 medical plan options. Choose a Traditional or High Deductible Health Plan.
  • There is an Opt-Out Cash Benefit option for those who have other medical insurance coverage.
  • 5 dental plan options,with an Opt-Out Cash Benefit option for those who have other dental insurance coverage.
  • 4 vision plan options under EyeMed or OptiCare

Retirement - Utah Retirement Systems (URS):

  • Employees who have any service credit with an employer covered by the Utah Retirement Systems before 7/1/2011 are in the Tier I Public Employees System.
  • Employees hired on or after 7/1/2011 an who have never been in the URS retirement system have two options for retirement in the Tier II System.
  • Tier 2 Hybrid Retirement System. Employer contributes an amount equal to   10% of your salary between both plans (pension and 401(k))
  • Tier 2 Defined Contribution Plan. Employer contributes an amount equal to 10% of your salary to a 401(k) plan only.  
  • Employer contributions to your 401(k) are vested after four years.

Paid Time Off:

  • Annual leave and sick leave are accrued at 4 hours per pay period each (4 hours annual,4 hours sick).
  • Annual leave amounts increase with years of service.
  • We have 12 paid holidays.
