University of Rochester Clinical Suppt Tech 2, CoreLab in Rochester, New York

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Blood Bank Clinical Lab Support Tech accurately performs unlicensed tasks and duties needed to support the clinical operation of the Blood Bank and Transfusion Medicine Unit. The person in this position will not perform any licensed activities. Duties will be comprised of accessioning samples, bringing in blood product inventory, releasing blood products, returning untransfused blood products, stocking supplies and answering phone calls.

SUPERVISION AND DIRECTION RECEIVED:

Under supervision of the Specimen Management/Microbiology Receiving Supervisor. Takes direction from the Clinical Support Tech III or Clinical Support Tech IV in the absence of the section Supervisor.

MACHINES AND EQUIPMENT USED:

Standard office equipment such as multi-feature ACD telephone, PC, copier, printer, scanner, fax machine, and the like. Software systems such as Laboratory Information System (LIS), Hospital Information System (HIS), and related software applications. Laboratory equipment may include operations of pneumatic tube system, centrifuge, automated pipette system, blood culture system and pre-analytical laboratory automation system as applicable per laboratory section.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES :

  1. Accession patient samples, enter required testing and blood product orders into the LIS and BBLIS

  2. Access e-record to obtain relevant patient information prior to performing patient testing or blood product set up

  3. Inventory management – reconcile blood products physically received with documentation supplied by the blood supplier. Resolve discrepancies or bring to the attention of a supervisor. Process blood product inventory and arrange units appropriately into physical inventory

  4. Release blood products as requested by the patient care area

  5. Returning blood products and place into available inventory, quarantine or discard if return criteria for acceptable blood products is not met.

  6. Restock supplies

  7. Answer and redirect phone calls

  8. Other unlicensed activities as directed by a supervisor

Other Requirements:

  1. Attendance and prompt arrival is expected for scheduled shifts.

  2. Work with potentially hazardous materials following lab safety procedures.

  3. Comply with department and University policies and procedures.

  3. Excellent computer and organizational skills.

  4. Ability to rotate shifts, weekends, and holidays as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS :

  • Associate’s degree or some college level course work in science or a related discipline; or an equivalent combination of education, experience or certification.

  • Customer service experience preferred.

  • Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy/physiology a plus.

Pay Range

Pay Range: $19.14 - $25.84 Hourly

The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job’s compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.
