Generac Power Systems Staff Software Engineer, Infrastructure in Reno, Nevada

We are Generac, a leading energy technology company committed to powering a smarter world.

Over the 60 plus years of Generac’s history, we’ve been dedicated to energy innovation. From creating the home standby generator market category, to our current evolution into an energy technology solutions company, we continue to push new boundaries.

Generac Clean Energy is building next generation residential clean energy storage (ESS) and home energy management (HEMS) systems. Our products are enabling the renewable energy rollout, assisting struggling power grids, and saving our customers money using intelligent energy management.

We take “full-stack” to the extreme. Teams collaborate tightly on every layer from firmware to web and mobile apps. Our software/firmware stack includes C, Rust, Java, Python, Go, React, React Native. Our cloud infrastructure includes MQTT, Kinesis, Terraform, Clickhouse, MySql, Mongo, Dynamo, Snowflake, SQS, and a wide range of AWS tech.

We’re looking for a Staff Software Engineer to join our Infrastructure Team. This team handles a mix of operations, observability, infrastructure, IAC, dev tooling, deployment tooling, and some application development projects too. We are obsessed with making our software stack well organized, observable, easy to deploy, and easy to understand.

What You’ll Do

  • Build unified IAC that brings our stack together and makes it understandable.

  • Solve networking accessibility challenges using VPCs and security groups. All IAC, of course.

  • Collaborate closely with our security team on diagnosis and solutions.

  • Build observability solutions and show the way for dev teams to adopt them.

  • Contribute to our service and infrastructure inventory system so that we can easily understand our stack and our system dependencies.

  • Collaborate with dev teams to get their systems into production. They own the application code; you own the deployment infra. Make sure pager alerts are set up correctly so that dev teams are responsible for responding to app bugs & issues, and you’re responsible for responding to infra issues.

  • Seek to understand the needs of the team and the wider software org. Find the gaps in our capabilities, our developer workflows, and our operations workflows.

  • Bring lots of good ideas for solutions and be able to communicate them well and gain traction.

  • Proactively chase improvement and excellence for yourself and for the organization.

What You’ll Bring

  • BS or MS in SWEng or CS, or comparable experience.

  • 5+ years of experience writing, deploying, and operating cloud systems and infrastructure.

  • Experience with cloud networking and security practices.

  • 3+ years of experience with IAC and deployment automation such as Terraform, CloudFormation, CDK, Helm, Ansible, etc. We use mostly Terraform.

  • Authentic passion for automation and maximizing value per line of code written.

  • Demonstrated experience with excellent observability and monitoring.
