​​Within Azure Data, the databases team builds and maintains Microsoft's operational Database systems. We store and manage data in a structured way to enable multitude of applications across various industries. We are on a journey to enable developer friendly, mission-critical, AI enabled operational Databases across relational, non-relational and OSS offerings.​

We are the rapidly growing Azure PostgreSQL Database Services team at Microsoft and we're looking for a Senior Software Engineer who has experience and are excited about building large scale managed database cloud services. If you love the engineering challenges of designing and delivering cutting-edge, cloud-scale distributed systems technologies and are passionate about developing fault tolerant, performant, self-managing, self-healing, secure services hosting mission critical customer workloads and operated on a massive scale, this role is for you!

As an engineer in our team, you will have an opportunity to design and build a massively scalable PostgreSQL database hosting service using the latest technologies in relational databases, computing, and container hosting. You will work closely with other engineers, product managers, and customer advocates across Azure and Microsoft to deliver high-quality features and solutions that solve customer problems and create business value. You will be able to apply your critical thinking, problem solving, design, coding and debugging skills to help build these services. You will have the chance to influence the evolution of PostgreSQL database engine and the next generation of database hosting platform for Microsoft. You will get to work on solving some of the most difficult and complex problems in the relational database systems and distributed systems space, with a highly motivated and passionate team. You will have the opportunity to work with vibrant team of open-source committers and contributors to develop deep relationships with open-source communities with high impact on Microsoft’s data business.

Responsibilities

Working with a team of software engineers to design, develop, test, and deploy high quality cloud services using agile methodologies and best practices.

Providing technical guidance, feedback, and mentorship to your team members and fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation, and customer focus

Partnering with other teams across Azure and Microsoft to onboard common initiatives and adopt best practices from other teams.

Managing the operational excellence, security, reliability, and scalability of the Azure PostgreSQL service. ​

Qualifications

Required/Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, or related technical discipline AND 4+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, or Python.

  • OR equivalent experience.

  • 3+ years of experience in designing, developing, and supporting production grade cloud services.

Other Requirements

Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: Microsoft Cloud Background Check:

  • This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred/Additional Qualifications

  • Solid Computer Science fundamentals, fluent in multi-threaded and asynchronous programming, passionate about architecting at scale

  • Experience in developing and operating production service at scale with high availability guarantees

  • Experience with internals of PostgreSQL or similar Enterprise Database Management system, including Storage Engine and High Availability.

  • Solve problems by always leading with deep passion and empathy for customers.

  • Have a deep desire to work collaboratively, solve problems with groups, find win/win solutions and celebrate successes.

Software Engineering IC4 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $112,000 - $218,400 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $145,800 - $238,600 per year.
