The SPARC organization manages Azure’s hardware roadmap from architecture concept through production for all of Microsoft’s current and future on-line services.  This role is for a Senior Power to Perf Efficiency Improvement Architect with a background in CPU/GPU SOC architectures, performance efficiency improvement modes, and general SOC/platform hardware design.

The candidate should have solid skills in the areas of power management, performance analysis, and being able to experiment by changing (HW, FW [eg.BIOS] or SW [eg. drivers]) to prove the ideas/solutions and by running necessary workloads to show the subsequent perf-to-pwr improvements. The successful candidate should have experience with some or all of the following: CPU/GPU architectures, PCIe architecture and cloud system/platform architecture.

Responsibilities

  • Perform & Analyze power & performance efficiency evaluation on CPUs & GPUs.

  • Evaluate pros/cons of different Linux and/or Windows power management schemes in server workload contexts.

  • Run benchmarks and evaluate performance for various power efficiency knobs.

  • Provide and prove solutions by working with a wide-stakeholders across SOC, platform, FW, OS and services teams.

  • Ability to work with open ended problem statements or figuring out the problem statement from large data set of fleet telemetry.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • 7+ years of technical engineering experience

  • OR Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 5+ years of technical engineering experience

  • OR Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 3+ years of technical engineering experience

  • OR Doctorate degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field.

  • 5+ years of professional experience of doing power/perf analysis of CPU, GPU or server/client platforms.

Other Requirements

Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: Microsoft Cloud Background Check:

  • This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's /Master's /PhD in Computer Science/Engineering and/or equivalent industry experience.

  • Understanding of SOC architecture of CPU & GPUs with focus on power efficiency.

  • Understanding of CPU/GPU system architectures is plus.

  • Demonstrated ability to debug complex post-silicon issues.

  • Open to learn newer areas.

  • Problem-solving, debugging and troubleshooting skills, advanced design and development skills

Hardware Engineering IC4 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $117,200 - $229,200 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $153,600 - $250,200 per year.
